Honoring a Revolutionary War hero and returning to roots
The town of Coventry has roots dating back to the Revolutionary War, when young Nathan Hale, who was born and raised in Coventry, volunteered to be a spy for George Washington, was caught by the British and then hanged. The Nathan Hale Homestead hosts events throughout the year, and across from Coventry Lake, the Captain Nathan Hale Monument was built in 1846. Covering almost 40 square miles, Coventry mixes countryside living with a small main street. To the north of the town feels more residential and country, with limited commercial businesses and spread out homes. To the south is Main Street and the history found. Shops and restaurants line Main, some going back to the 1800s. “We have our own police department and schools,” says Cheri Trudon, a real estate agent at ERA Blanchard & Rossetto, INC. Real Estate. People may leave the area, but they also return to their roots. “There are locally owned fitness clubs in town that are run by people who came back,” Trudon says. “We really appreciate that.”
Known for its rural charm, Coventry offers a blend of scenic landscapes and historic sites.
Founded in 1712, Coventry now has about 12,500 residents.

Activities on the lake, state forest for hiking and golf to the north
Lake Wangumbaug, commonly referred to as Coventry Lake, sits in in the middle of the downtown historic area, and although parking can be limited, the beach remains a draw for residents. "The lake is also used for water-skiing, stand-up paddle boarding, ice fishing, kayaking and boating,” says Trudon. “It is a big draw for the community.” The Nathan Hale State Forest sits to the south, a 1,560-acre park mainly aimed towards hikers and hunters. During hunting seasons, it is highly recommended to wear safety orange. To the north of town, the Skungamaug River Golf Club has an 18-hole facility for golfers to use.
The Coventry Lake provides ample space for various boating activities, including kayaking.

200-year-old tavern and the largest farmers market in Connecticut
On Main Street, the Bidwell Tavern first opened in 1822 and sells award-winning wings and beer. Across the street from the tavern, Woke Breakfast & Coffee sells breakfast until 2 p.m. on the weekdays. Italian restaurant Lakeview Restaurant and Bar lives up to its name and looks out over Coventry Lake. To the north of the neighborhood, Highland Park Market is a small grocery store along the Boston Turnpike. As the largest farmers market in Connecticut, the Coventry Farmers Market is open every Sunday from June to September. Entering its 21st season, the market has vendors from around the state coming to sell handmade products, food, flowers, clothes and everything in between.
Bidwell's Tavern has served the community for many years, offering food, and drinks in Coventry.

Historical tours and Christmas on Main Street
At the Nathan Hale Homestead Museum, residents can tour the home where the Revolutionary hero was born, or take part in workshops hat showcase what living in 1776 was like. CoventryFest, held in June at Patriots Park, has food trucks, family-friendly events and occasionally ends in fireworks. “Each year Coventry’s Christmas in the Village is held on Main Street,” Trudon says. “Hot chocolate and food from local eateries are available, and Santa comes in on a horse-drawn sleigh to take families on rides.”
Smaller homes on the lake and larger homes to the north
There are homeowners associations scattered throughout town, but are mostly centered around Coventry Lake with a monthly fee ranging from $5 to $42, mostly for any maintenance and upkeep that may be required. With the northern portion of the town more rural, some plots of land are for sale, beginning at $5,000 to $200,000 for over 3 acres. Colonials are scattered throughout the area, beginning at $87,000 for the bare bones of a home to $445,000 for a home built in 1740 that has been renovated. There are also some saltbox homes built in 1750 that sell for $700,000. Bungalows, Colonial Revival, ranch, bi-level and Cape Cod fill the area, beginning at $90,000 for a one-bedroom, one-bathroom bungalow and reaching up to $790,000 for a Colonial Revival built in 2024. Homes on a cul-de-sac will be closer together, while the homes that line the roads tend to be further spread out, potentially hidden at the end of a long driveway. Most homes have attached garages, and some will have solar panels. Homes closer to the downtown areas of Coventry or Coventry will be closer together.
These homes often come with private docks or beachfront access, perfect for boating and fishing.
Historic houses in Coventry can date to the 1700s and 1800s.

One bus line to the north and walking to the south
There is one bus that runs on U.S. Route 44 in the north of the town, but the area is more suited to cars. “Some of the recent improvements have made it easier to walk downtown,” Trudon says. Sidewalks have been enlarged and old-fashioned lanterns line the street.
Route 44 highway stretches across several states, connecting Connecticut with Massachusetts.
Coventry is characterized by wide open spaces criss-crossed by a few major roads.
