Monte Casino offers city and mid-century homes
Situated on a plateau on the southern end of Covington, the Monte Casino neighborhood provides homebuyers with views of Cincinnati and the Ohio River with plenty of single-family home options. Originally a monastery and vineyard, the area started developing housing in the 1960s and continues to be dominated by mid-century ranch styles and contemporary bi-levels. The community also has transit access and is near the local parks, shopping centers and dining locations. However, it also maintains a quiet but close atmosphere for residents. “It’s a very close-knit community. Usually, the people who live here have lived there forever,” says Martha Works Larsen, an agent with Century 21 Premiere Properties who has seven years of experience. “It’s very rare for new homes pop up for that area.”
Bi-levels and ranch-styles dominate the neighborhood
While ranch-styles and bi-levels dominate Monte Casino, multifamily units are also present along Highland Pike and Hanser Drive. Prices for single-family properties can range from $220,000 to $400,000. Inventory also tends to move quickly, selling after seven days on the market, far below the national average of 52 days.
Properties are typically close together on gridded streets or cul-de-sacs, with oak trees typically accenting lawns. Some roads also do not have sidewalks. Some streets can be hilly, but Larsen says they become flatter towards the center. Maps from the Federal Emergency Management Agency show no risk of flooding. Larsen says that the area has attracted mostly retirees and people who have “lived there forever,” but is also attracting young families.
Dining and shopping locations are close by
Dining options outside of Monte Casino are along Madison Pike or U.S. Highway 25, including chains and local spots. The Fort Wright Family Restaurant, off U.S. 25 on Ashwood Circle, serves breakfast items, burgers and sandwiches. Reality Tuesday Cafe offers salads and soups. Walt’s Hitching Post on Madison Pike offers steaks, ribs and craft cocktails.
A Walmart is on the corner of Highland and Madison Pike, while more big-box retailers are 3 miles south in Fort Mitchell.
Public and private school options are available for students
Public school students can start at Glenn O. Swing Elementary, graded B-plus on Niche. Pupils can continue to C-minus-rated Holmes Middle School and finish at Holmes High School, earning a C-minus and offering International Baccalaureate programs in English, history and chemistry. Students can transfer schools in the district only by application. Private religious schools are also nearby, including Covington Catholic High School, which has an A-minus, and the unranked St. Agnes School for kindergarten through eighth grade.
