Suburban Neighborhood in Cranston, Rhode Island
Providence County 02920
Knightsville has a long history in the Cranston area, but it really took off as a suburb in the 1950s. Part of its enduring appeal has been the strong Italian influence, which you can see in the local eateries and the week-long Feast of Saint Mary held every July. But there’s an additional factor that people like: Knightsville is highly stable, with houses often getting passed down through the generations.
Serena Gendron, team manager at Homesmart professionals, notes that a strong sense of community is helpful for understanding the neighborhoods of Cranston. “It’s got a great school system. It was named one of the top 25 safest cities in the United States, which is also really awesome.”
With houses being passed down through relatives, it can be a challenge finding properties for sale – but that just makes the finds more rewarding. For example, you can find a three-bedroom Cape Cod with interior updates and a fenced backyard. Prices begin in the upper $300,000s. The setting feels like old school suburbia, with wide residential streets curving past schools and small businesses.
George J. Peters School is located on the west end, near a small cluster of businesses like the Stop & Shop grocery store, making it a convenient part of your daily route. Nearly 300 students attend grades K-5, and the student-teacher ratio is 14 to 1. Niche gave the school a B-minus in the teachers category. Hugh B. Bain Middle sits opposite on the east end, and has a larger student population, with 600 enrolled in grades 6-8. Niche awarded the school an A in the diversity category. Cranston High School East has the largest student population: over 1,500 students are enrolled in grades 9-12. With a student-teacher ratio of 12 to 1, the school earned a B-minus in the teachers category and a B overall. Residents also have access to the Knightsville branch of the Cranston Public Library – a quaint brick ranch-like building located on the corner of a residential stretch.
Knightsville has some unique outdoor features, like the Washington Secondary Bike Path, which stretches 19 miles from Cranston to western Coventry. The path follows a former railroad line, taking you past forested areas, rivers and historic sights like the Summit General Store, one of the oldest general stores in Rhode Island. On the north side you’ll find the Dyer and Randall Ponds: places where you can relax, fish or enjoy a canoe ride.
The two main thoroughfares you’ll hear residents refer to are Phenix Avenue and Cranston Street. Along Phenix Avenue you’ll find community hangouts like pubs, lounges and brunch spots. For a sweet treat with fun colors, step into Boba Lova Tea and Snack Bar – their chewy donuts are a local hit. Cranston Street is the place to go when you’re seeking more of a fine dining experience. This is where those locally famous Italian eateries are concentrated: Antonio’s Trattoria aims for a small, intimate setting and multi-course meals.
Knightsville has the kind of tightknit atmosphere associated with yesteryear, but you can still find it alive and well today.
