A suburban community south of downtown Baltimore

Centrally located between downtown Baltimore and Washington D.C., Crofton is a suburban neighborhood known for its access to major shopping centers and the Crofton Country Club. The neighborhood was built up around the 18-hole course and is also the birthplace of Johns Hopkins. "Think old-time Americana,” says Aidan Surlis, Realtor with RE/MAX Leading Edge and lifelong Crofton resident. “It’s a welcoming place. You can’t go for a walk without people stopping to chat. It’s residential, friendly, quiet.” Similar to Gambrills to the north, the average list price for homes is about $540,000, which is lower than nearby Crownsville and Davidsonville. Homes in traditional styles sit tucked together in cul-de-sacs near three local schools within the Anne Arundel County Public School District, which is graded an overall B-plus on Niche.

New constructions and Crofton Meadows condos

A wide variety of architecture and housing lifestyles coexist in Crofton. “You’ve got original detached houses on third and quarter-acre lots, townhomes and over-under townhomes,” Surlis says. On Johns Hopkins Road, locals can see the birthplace of the man himself, a Colonial brick home built in 1760 on a large estate. Traditional family homes with four or more bedrooms and two-car garages sit in small clusters throughout the neighborhood. Cul-de-sacs, where families can ride their bikes together, are common in the area. Condo and townhome alternatives in various styles are available in communities like Crofton Meadows or Crofton Village. Many family homes can be found at prices between $350,000 and $750,000, while large estates and new constructions can cost between $800,000 and over $1 million. Townhomes and condos can be found at prices between $250,000 and $650,000.

Anne Arundel County public schools

For kindergarten through fifth grade, Crofton Elementary School is graded a B-plus on Niche. Crofton Middle School is rated an A-minus and is the No. 2 best middle school in Anne Arundel County. Crofton Middle offers several extracurricular clubs, including dance, orchestra, a newspaper club and a student council. Crofton High School scores a B-plus and has a brand-new facility off Davidsonville Road. Here, Crofton Cardinals play a variety of sports, including boys' and girls' soccer, lacrosse and basketball. “Youth organizations and recreational sports are huge in Crofton,” Surlis says. In addition to school sports, the Crofton Athletic Council is a local nonprofit that promotes programs from basketball to soccer to field hockey and cheerleading. The Bell Branch Athletic Complex hosts games and events on its five multi-purpose athletic fields.

Two country clubs and the Bell Branch Athletic Complex

Avid golfers can take advantage of not one but two different country clubs in Crofton. Walden Country Club on Riedel Road has an 18-hole course, banquet hall and a bar and grill serving its Walden Classic cheeseburger. Open since 1964, Crofton Country Club has hosted four Maryland Opens, organizes competitive and social events and offers members access to its swimming pool and Traditions Grille restaurant. Next to the high school, Crofton Park has a few walking trails and a playground, as well as a small pond nearby. Bell Branch Dog Park at the Bell Branch Athletic Complex accommodates both small and large breeds. For those living in Chapman Farm Commons, there is a playground and tennis courts within walking distance. The nearby B&A Trail is another scenic route that follows an abandoned railway line and offers visitors views of the Little Patuxent River.

Shops and restaurants at Waugh Chapel Towne Centre

The Village at Waugh Chapel Towne Centre is a major shopping destination for the area. Big box stores like Crofton Ace Hardware, Target, Aldi and the Wegmans grocery store provide all the essentials that Crofton residents need. While there are many chain restaurants and fast-food joints, a few local spots dot the commercial landscape. Molloy’s Irish Pub & Grill was opened in 2015 by co-owners Marty Brone and Colm Coyne before his passing, who were both born and raised in Ireland. It’s a great local spot to play darts or listen to live music with a pint for some classic Irish hospitality. Nonna Angela’s Italian Bistro is family-owned and serves fresh pizzas and pasta. Kozy Beans Coffee has an artsy atmosphere for bringing a laptop or the family in for a quiet morning. On Reidel Road, the Autumn Lake Healthcare offices are right next to the Crofton Library, which has occasional bilingual Storytime and events or workshops for adults.

Commutes on Interstate 97 to major east coast cities

Crofton is conveniently located to three major cities and many amenities in central Maryland. “Really, a big part of the draw is being in the golden triangle,” Surlis says. “You’re in the center of Washington, Baltimore, and Annapolis, and it’s an easy commute to these three big areas. For dual-income households, people can work in two different cities but live in the middle.” For checkups, Luminis Health Primary Care Center is at The Village at Waugh Chapel, 4 miles up the road. Crofton locals can travel 24 miles north on Interstate 97 to downtown Baltimore, where they can access Johns Hopkins Hospital, museums, restaurants and the National Aquarium. For weekends away, the Baltimore Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport is about 20 miles north via Interstate 97.

GreatSchools: The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
