Thompson Hill
Neighborhood in Cumberland, Rhode Island
Providence County 02864
Suburban ranch-style homes and extra-large, acre-plus properties
Tidy suburban streets split off Diamond Hill Road. These narrow lots and clean-cut lawns contrast with the wooded, acre-plus properties along the winding Little Pond County Road. That’s the makeup of Thompson Hill: mid-20th-century subdivisions and still-rural outskirts, all packed into one little neighborhood. Even the suburban streets hearken back to when northern Rhode Island was composed of farmland, with names like Farmview Drive and Hayfield Lane. Here, New England sensibilities pop up in the area’s Colonial Revivals and Cape Cods, with plenty of all-American ranch-style and split-level houses in between. Houses tucked away on country backroads tend to feature extra square footage and generous setbacks, with rows of trees as a buffer from traffic. Prices for homes on lots of less than an acre are priced from $360,000 to $850,000, while houses with more elbow room list from $560,000 to $1.2 million. Thompson Hill currently has a CAP Index crime score of 1 out of 10, lower than the national average of 4.Bike along the Blackstone River or hike around a former monastery
Although there aren’t any parks in Thompson Hill, the neighborhood is sandwiched between multiple Cumberland spots for outdoor recreation. Just to the south lies the Monastery, which — despite its unusual name and location — is home to the Cumberland Library, not an active abbey. Trappist monks once occupied the Monastery, but nowadays, its grounds are home to miles of hiking trails and town facilities such as the Cumberland Senior Center. Less than 5 miles west is Blackstone River State Park, another historic location on the Blackstone Canal now popular for riverfront walks, freshwater fishing and kayaking. The Blackstone River Bikeway spans 11 miles between Woonsocket and Cumberland, passing through the park. More trails to explore are a short drive north at Diamond Hill Park, which also has baseball and soccer fields. “The Ice Cream Machine is right across the street from Diamond Hill Park, and a lot of people will go there after the park,” Jablonski says.College credit gives students a head start at Cumberland High
Thompson Hill homes are served by the Cumberland School Department. Most addresses are zoned to Community Elementary, which Niche rates an A. North Cumberland Middle scores an A-minus, and Cumberland High earns a B-plus. The high school offers the College Board’s AP Capstone program, plus additional ways to earn college credit through Roger Williams University, the University of Rhode Island and the New England Institute of Technology.Diamond Hill Road has entrances to Interstate 295
Interstate 295, known locally as the Providence Beltway, passes through Thompson Hill to the south and has entrances on Diamond Hill Road. To the east, it connects to other major highways, such as Interstate 95 and U.S. Highway 1. Providence is roughly 15 miles south, and Boston is about 50 miles north, though some professionals park and ride at the Attleboro commuter rail MBTA station. Just south of Providence, Rhode Island T.F. Green is the nearest international airport. Emergency care is even closer, with the Landmark Medical Center less than 10 miles away in Woonsocket.Beer flights from Ravenous Brewing and apple muffins from Phantom Farms
In the few short miles between the north and south ends of Thompson Hill, businesses range from rustic farms to hip breweries such as Ravenous Brewing Company. Opened in 2012 in Woonsocket, the microbrewery upgraded its space when it moved to Cumberland, allowing it to host live events and expand its drink selection. Patrons today can explore the range of craft IPAs, pilsners and seltzers with a beer flight in the taproom. “It’s also close to Cumberland House of Pizza, one of the most popular places in town,” Jablonski says. “They were voted the best pizza place in Rhode Island Monthly, and it’s been around as long as I can remember.” Just north of the neighborhood is Phantom Farms, a beloved local apple orchard known for its apple pastries, best enjoyed with a view of the trees. At the south end of the area, Dave’s Fresh Marketplace is close by for grocery runs. “Dave’s Fresh Marketplace is the best because it’s a small, Rhode Island-based chain, and they ship their bread to all kinds of other businesses. It’s so good,” says Patty Tinnell, a Realtor with Keller Williams Elite who sells homes across Rhode Island. Other major shopping centers aren’t far, with Emerald Square Mall 5 miles east and Wrentham Village Premium Outlets less than 10 miles north.
