How Cut Off got its name
What gives the town of Cut Off, a Louisiana community of around 5,500 residents, its unusual name? Some locals claim that it’s because the town is “cut off” from civilization. It's a good guess considering that Houma, the closest major city, lies more than 25 miles west. However, the real story is more complex. When the Cheniere Hurricane struck the Louisiana coast in 1893, a band of survivors moved north, settling around Bayou Lafourche. In the early days, the area was called “Cote Blanche,” or “White Coast,” because the settlers painted many houses white. To make it easier to travel around Lafourche Parish, residents created a “cut-off,” or a loop that shortens and straightens the course of a river by creating a new channel--and the town adopted the name. Bayou Lafourche runs through the heart of this fishing community, with Highway 1 following its path. Along with angling, the area offers plenty of other outdoor recreation including golfing and target shooting.

Outfits like Riptide Charter provide guide services, fuel, tackle and ice for residents or visitors who don’t own boats.
