Steels Corners, an outdoor haven 5 miles from downtown Cuyahoga Falls
With the vast Cuyahoga Valley National Park in the neighborhood, Steels Corners has no shortage of opportunities to get outdoors. While it is on the outskirts of the city, it is only a 5-mile drive to Downtown Cuyahoga Falls. “Residents are drawn to the north side near Steels Corners for its convenience and balance of quiet neighborhoods with quick access to highways, shopping and services,” says Kaylee Piper, executive director of the Downtown Cuyahoga Falls Partnership.
Locals explore the vast Cuyahoga Valley National Park
Much of the land in Steels Corners is part of Cuyahoga Valley National Park, which spans nearly 33,000 acres. “The national park is truly the community’s backyard,” Piper says. People kayak and fish on the Cuyahoga River. There are miles of multiuse trails to explore, including a 20-mile stretch of the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail, which goes past Beaver Marsh. Once completed, the Towpath Trail will be over 100 miles long. Another popular trail goes along sandstone cliffs known as the Ritchie Ledges. The Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad rides through the park. It puts on themed excursions like the North Pole Adventure, which has holiday-themed train cars like Santa’s Workshop and Mrs. Claus’ Kitchen. Keyser Park is about 2 miles away and includes a playground, basketball and tennis courts.
20th century homes are on at least half an acre of land
Oak and pine trees shade Steels Corners’ roads, which go through rolling hills and farmland. Residents here have more land than those in other Cuyahoga Falls neighborhoods, with most lots starting at half an acre and exceeding 5 acres. Older properties include farmhouses and Foursquares from the early 1900s, but most homes were built in the mid-to-late 20th century. These include split-level and ranch-style houses. Prices range from $360,000 to $500,000. Indian Springs is a community of manufactured homes in the northeast corner of the neighborhood.
Steels Corners receives a CAP Index Crime Score of 1 out of 10, lower than the national average of 4.
Blossom Music Center and Porthouse Theatre are in the park
Resting among the forests of Cuyahoga Valley National Park is Blossom Music Center, an outdoor concert venue. “Residents can catch big-name artists or orchestra performances or have a casual night on the lawn – making it a signature experience without having to travel far,” Piper says. Every summer, the Cleveland Orchestra has a residency called the Blossom Music Festival, which features movies with live scores and guest artists like Laufey. Also on the center’s grounds is Porthouse Theatre, which hosts Kent State University’s summer theatre program and puts on several summer musicals.
Residents also attend the city’s three Heritage Festivals: Cuyahoga Falls Oktoberfest, Festa Italiana and the Riverfront Irish Festival. These weekend-long celebrations have music, dancing and food.
Residents dine at Sarah’s Vineyard and restaurants downtown
Sarah’s Vineyard is across the street from Blossom Music Center. Besides offering a rotating selection of red, white, and sweet wines, it also serves wood-fired pizza. Solo at Sarah’s is a concert series at the winery every Wednesday night from November through April. For more dining options, locals travel to Downtown Cuyahoga Falls. “Downtown Cuyahoga Falls has become a vibrant, walkable district where people come to dine, shop and explore,” Piper says. For a meal along the river, people can go to the American restaurant Burntwood Tavern. Flury’s Cafe is open for breakfast and brunch most of the week. Also downtown is the Natatorium, an indoor gym and aquatic center, and the city’s amphitheater, which hosts the summer concert series.
The Cuyahoga Valley Farmers Market is a year-round market held at the national park. All of the produce comes from farms within 100 miles of the park. Residents can also find fresh produce at Szalay’s Farm Market, and they do the rest of their grocery shopping at Marc’s. Walmart and Lowe’s are 5 miles away.
Students attend well-rated Woodridge schools
Steels Corners is part of the Woodridge Local School District, which has limited open enrollment. Woodridge Elementary receives a B from Niche, while Woodridge Middle School earns a B-plus. Woodridge High, which also scores a B, offers career and technical education programs like culinary arts and engineering through the Six District Educational Compact. Private education includes the A-rated Summit Christian School, which has kindergarten through eighth grade.
Cars are the most practical way to get around
While Akron Metro has some bus routes in the neighborhood, Piper says that most people use cars. “Driving is the most practical way to reach the park, downtown or Blossom,” she says. Steels Corners Road leads about 3 miles to State Route 8. Akron-Canton Airport is about 25 miles away and has nonstop flights to nearly 25 U.S. cities. For international travel, residents travel about 30 miles to Cleveland Hopkins International Airport. The Akron General Health and Wellness Center, part of the Cleveland Clinic, has an emergency room about 3 miles away.
