Just south of Kessler, below West Davis Street, lies the eclectic Bishop Arts District, which offers trendy food options, nightlife venues, and a celebrated shopping area that is held together by local businesses. "The district has exploded over the last ten years," says Thompson. "If you're going to a bar, you're running into your neighbors, and a lot of shop owners live locally." The district is home to the Kessler Theater, which, after nearly three decades of inactivity, the former movie house reopened in 2010 as a music venue featuring a heavy rotation of famous acts. "There is a huge sense of community in Oak Cliff," Thompson says. "Mardi Gras is the biggest annual event with a 5k on the same day."

Go swimming at Kidd Springs Park
During the summer swelter, locals head to Kidd Springs Park on West Canty Street and soak up the sun at the aquatic center. Kessler kids may be a part of the Dallas Independent School District. Nearby is Rosemont Lower, educating preschool through third grade and Rosemont Upper, serving fourth through eighth grades.
