Big city living in one of Dallas' oldest nieghborhoods

Panoramic views of the Dallas skyline draw homebuyers to The Cedars, but its lively and artistic community is why they choose to stay. In the epicenter of Downtown Dallas, The Cedars neighborhood is known for its assortment of activities, from spending the day drinking with buddies at breweries to seeing hand-made work at contemporary art galleries. This southside Dallas locale earned its name in the 1800s for the cedars that once decorated this prairie-turned-industrial park filled with high-rise condos and lofts. "I love living here. It's a great location, next to so many highways," says Emily Thompson, a Global Real Estate Advisor with Briggs Freeman Sotheby's International Realty and a life-long resident of Dallas and The Cedars for nearly three years. "It's community-oriented and filled with great music venues, artists and eclectic people who love city life."

Time for a concert at the Longhorn Ballroom

After workdays and weekends, neighbors in this upbeat community are most likely getting ready for a movie at the Alamo Drafthouse or a show at two historic music venues: Gilley's and the Longhorn Ballroom on Corinth Street. Sitting on Gould Street, Lee Harvey's is a long-standing bar enjoyed for its friendly atmosphere across the street from The Dive-In, a summer staple where locals can drink and swim for a small fee. On South Akard Street, the sweet aroma of fresh coffee pours from Full City Rooster and Baby Back Shak is an award-winning barbecue joint, and Sandwich Hag dishes out Vietnamese favorites. Urban Market offers a handful of items for groceries on Botham Jean Boulevard, and Tom Thumb is on Live Oak Street. With Dallas' Historic district in The Cedars' backyard, locals also have access to the Dallas Farmers Market on South Harwood Street, which hosts an open-air market at The Shed on weekends.

A community of creatives await in The Cedars

The Cedars Neighborhood Association overlooks the community and acts as a point of contact with the city to advocate for revitalization efforts. Events like the 4th of July Parade began in 2021 to honor a sick community member and are now a beloved tradition where neighbors march down Beaumont Street in festive floats. "The biggest event we have is The Cedars Open Studios; it happens once a year in November," Thompson says. "There are a bunch of artists who live here who do things like glass blowing, painting and ceramics, and they open their homes so the public can walk around and tour."

Travel back in time to Old City Park

What began as the location of Dallas' first city park now hosts the Dallas Heritage Village. History lives on South Harwood Street at Old City Park; this area of preserved homes and old businesses gives visitors the opportunity to step back in time and discover what life was like for Texans over 100 years ago. Residents come to stroll the grounds to view the old pioneer homes and a general store or enjoy the living history museum through its year-round events like their spooky ghost tours. On Gould Street, the over 2-acre Forest Park features a basketball court, picnic tables, trails and a playground.

Lofty living in industrial warehouses

A railroad track runs along The Cedar's southern edge, contributing to its industrial atmosphere. The Cedars is filled with narrow streets flanked by brick warehouses covered in murals, turned into luxury units with amenities, townhomes, condos and single-family homes. Some areas of The Cedars have sidewalks, others don't, and the same goes for garages, though many residents use street parking. Although the heart of The Cedars has mostly lofts, ranch styles mingle with traditional 20th-century Craftsman homes that withstood the industrial era. Prices typically range from the upper $300,000 for a one-bedroom apartment to over $680,000 for a three-bedroom townhouse.
