Classic New England homes with views of the shore
Single-family homes here vary significantly in size, style and price. Shorefront properties range from sprawling, upscale homes to more modest ranch-style dwellings. Throughout the neighborhood, buyers will find cozy clapboard cottages, ranch-style houses and shingle homes typical of New England. Homeowners take pride in their lawns. Most are thoughtfully landscaped with flowers and decorative shrubbery. In the summertime, hydrangea bushes ornament the streets with pink, blue and white blooms. While sale prices are on the rise, Bliss Corner is still considered more affordable than the metro Boston area. Prices typically range from $325,000 to $900,000, but some properties near the shore list for more than $1 million. Buyers should note some communities have monthly fees between $125 to $1,000.
Sandy beaches and forested hikes
Clark Cove enjoys direct exposure to Buzzard’s Bay, and local boaters can dock their vessels nearby at South Wharf Yacht Yard & Marina. Residents can feel the sand between their toes at Jones Park, a town-owned beach with a playground. The semi-sheltered cove makes for calmer water, and beachgoers share the fresh sea air with the gulls, ospreys and terns that soar overhead. For a more secluded seaside experience, residents can join the private club at Anthony’s Beach. Membership includes a bathhouse, shaded beachside porch, boardwalk and pier. Inland, the Dodge Reserve offers a short hike through oak forest and cattail marsh habitats. For indoor recreation, residents can find the pickleball craze alive and well at Pickleball & More. Planet Fitness is next door.
Highly rated Dartmouth Public Schools
Children can attend neighborhood schools, Joseph DeMello Elementary or Andrew B. Cushman Elementary, earning B-plus ratings from Niche. DeMello serves many bilingual students and offers support for English language learners, and Cushman sits beside the Dartmouth Community Park playground and the Southworth Library. Students can move on to Dartmouth Middle School, with a B-plus rating, and finish their degrees at A-minus-rated Dartmouth High School. St. Teresa of Calcutta School and Friends Academy are two nearby private options. For students seeking higher education, the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth is a little over 5 miles away.
Historic dumping in Bliss Corner
Buyers here should note the ongoing efforts to address the historic dumping of hazardous materials in the neighborhood dating to the 1930s (prior to residential development, which began in the 1940s). The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection has been investigating this since 2018. During an inspection, it found waste material in soil on some residential properties and lots in development. According to a report by WBUR, the EPA began removing soil with “high concentrations of lead and polychlorinated biphenyls, or PCBs,” from the most contaminated homes in June of 2022. The same report notes that no illnesses have been directly tied to this issue.
A short drive to Interstate 195
With some sidewalks, residents living closer to shore can walk to destinations on busy thoroughfares like Dartmouth Street and Cove Road. Cyclists can also ride around, though there is minimal infrastructure for bike travel. Most residents drive around. Downtown New Bedford is a 2-mile drive, Providence is a 33-mile drive via Interstate 195, and Boston is about a 60-mile drive using State Routes 140 and 24. New Bedford Regional Airport is about 5 miles away. Residents without cars can catch a Southeastern Regional Transit Authority (SRTA) bus at stops lining Dartmouth Street.
A quick trip to Dartmouth Mall
Several supermarkets along the main thoroughfare of Dartmouth Street, including Stop & Shop and Seabra Foods, can keep pantries stocked. For clothing, home goods and the like, the commercial corridor along Route 6, anchored by Dartmouth Mall, is about 4 miles away. Great eats can be found in the neighborhood. Lolly’s Cafe is the go-to spot for breakfast, while Fay’s and Ma Raffa’s are two popular places for Italian cuisine. Thirsty Whale Tavern is the local watering hole, offering classic pub fare and specialty cocktails.
