Shopping districts frame an ethnically rich community
In Ford Woods, suburban living, ample shopping districts and a close-knit community create an ethnic enclave. Located in east Dearborn, many residents are of Middle Eastern and North African descent. Like surrounding neighborhoods, this community is considered a step up from the South End, where many residents started their journeys in the United States.
“Most of the people share heritage,” says Victor Fawaz, Realtor with Re/Max Team 2000. “They have the same traditions, the same family values. They maybe don't want their kids to be the only Muslim kid in their school, especially when they might be wearing something different or looking different.”
Residents can find community in the neighborhood mosques, coffee shops and parks, providing safe spaces to express their cultures. While Ford Woods looks like a typical metro Detroit suburb on the surface, a deeper dive showcases the impacts of its diversity.

A tempting treat at every corner
Bordered by three major thoroughfares, Ford Woods has ample shopping and dining options. Warren borders it to the north and is packed with locally owned restaurants, stores and services, including AlTayeb Restaurant. The brunch destination specializes in Lebanese Cuisine and has quickly become a community favorite. Greenfield Road, which borders it to the west, is home to the popular Dearborn Sweets Inc. The bakery specializes in decorated cakes and offers a diverse selection of Arabic sweets.
“Every corner you go on, there is something unique from different countries, from their culture,” Fawaz says. “It's hard to go down the street without thinking about the shawarma place on the left-hand side and the bakery on the other; it's calling to me,” he jokes. Papaya Market sits at the intersection of Chase and Warren and is known for its halal meat, a broad selection of produce and Arabic spices and ingredients. Ford Road is to the south and features big-box stores, including Walmart and Target.

Well-kept homes on smaller lots
With lots that are only about 4,000 square feet, most houses are separated by long, paved driveways. Small front and back yards frame well-kept 1930s bungalows, cottages and colonial-style houses. There are also a few new traditional builds in the mix. Homes hardly hit the market, but when they do, they generally sell between $200,000 and $550,000.

Mosques create space for community
There are dozens of mosques within a mile of Ford Woods, including the Karbala Islamic Center, where residents can hear calls to prayer from within the community. As the first Iraqi Islamic Center in Michigan, the institution especially appeals to people of Iraqi descent but is open to all people of Islamic faith. Residents can join peace walks, generally starting in Warren Avenue and ending in Ford Woods Park. Other mosques around the community, such as the American Moslem Bekaa Center, host community events and offer prayer halls.
William Ford Elementary, Lowrey Middle and Fordson High
Kindergarten through fifth-grade kids can attend the B-minus-rated William Ford Elementary School. Lowrey Middle School also earns a B-minus. Fordson High School has a B and is ranked the 25th-best public high school in Wayne County. Built in the early 1920s, it’s well known for its intricate architecture. Dearborn Public Schools accommodate their student population with halal meals and student-led prayers.

Ramadan in America’s Arab Capital
Ramadan epitomizes the culture of Dearborn. “If you’re going to be here for Ramadan, it’s going to be really impactful,” Fawaz says. “People come in, thousands, from all other areas because it feels more impactful for them as religious [people] because you have more.” Fawaz notes that the city’s many mosques host special sermons, while restaurants change their hours to accommodate those participating. He says that this allows many to be with their community and experience the holiday’s profoundness as a unit. The Ramadan Suhoor Festival at Fairlane Mall is the largest in North America. Various food vendors and activities allow thousands to break fasting while surrounded by those of the same faith.
Ford Woods Park
The namesake Ford Woods Park is a sprawling green space in this neighborhood's southwestern corner. It offers various recreation options, including baseball and tennis fields, a playground, a swimming pool and more. Adjacent to the park, the Dearborn Ice Skating Center features two NHL-sized ice surfaces, offers public skating hours, and is home to local ice hockey leagues.

Ford Road, Interstate 94 and Southfield Freeway
Residents can walk to neighborhood parks, stores and schools but use Ford Road for longer commutes. It meets with Interstate 94 just east of the neighborhood, the quickest route to Detroit Metropolitan Airport, roughly 13 miles southwest. While Interstate 94 runs east and west, the Southfield Freeway runs north and south and is about 2 miles west of Ford Woods. Just west of the Freeway, Henry Ford Emergency Medicine – Fairlane is the closest 24-hour emergency care center. Residents can also use DDOT bus routes 8 and 10 to navigate metro Detroit.
