Hemlock Park
Tree-shaded streets feature a mix of early 20th-century and turn-of-the-century properties
Hemlock Park’s housing stock was originally developed to keep up with a growing population of autoworkers during the first half of the 20th century. Since then, some homes were built as late as the mid-2000s. A mixture of brick cottages, Dutch Colonials and bungalows, many recently renovated, imbuing the neighborhood with a vintage vibe. The average street is shaded by curbside trees next to sidewalks, small front lawns and passages to rear driveways. Homes from the 1920s to ’40s tend to sell for $150,000 to $350,000, while those built since the 1970s have sold for $445,000 to $475,000.Major roads serve as hubs of diverse retail and restaurant options
“Dearborn is very popular for its food. We have around 600 restaurants and 50 cafes," says Victor Fawaz, a Realtor with Re/Max Team 2000 with extensive experience in the area. "There’s a new café opening up almost every day.” With its location near the center of town, Hemlock Park is surrounded by restaurants and retail. To the south, Ford Road is home to the Papaya Fruit Market, while Schaefer Road to the west is lined with local eateries. Qahwah House, run by eighth-generation coffee farmers, brings the flavors of Yemen to Metro Detroit, while Aldaar Restaurant offers Yemeni-style lamb over rice and shakshuka. Along Warren Avenue, dozens of restaurants add to the diverse culinary scene, including the Hamido Restaurant specializing in Lebanese-style rotisserie chicken and Darbunah Restaurant offering family-style meals. Super Greenland Market is a local grocer.Fordson High has a major focus on football
Students can start their education at Lowrey Elementary School, which receives a B rating from Niche, before attending the B-minus-rated Lowrey Middle School and B-rated Fordson High School. Fordson High is regionally known for its football team, which has won dozens of conference and state titles.“It’s a very family-oriented area," Fawaz says. "Many teenagers go out to eat and stay out all night, and a lot of kids from school go out and do things together.”Outdoor activities from swimming to movie-watching
The neighborhood takes its name from Hemlock Park, a triangular-shaped green space located at its southern edge. Like the community itself, the park has never stopped growing: A public swimming pool was added in 1954 and a splash pad installed in 2019. A baseball diamond, a playground and hills used for wintertime sledding add to the park’s array of outdoor recreation. Fans of classic movies can relive the quintessential drive-in experience at the nearby Ford-Wyoming theater.Easy commutes to employment and healthcare
Hemlock Park’s location along Schaefer Road puts it within a 10-minute drive from Dearborn’s Ford manufacturing plant and neighboring factories. Caring Pediatrics is located within Hemlock Park, and the Detroit Community Health Connection general hospital is a 10-minute drive down Warren Avenue.
