The birthplace of Henry Ford
Oakman Grove is a prime example of Dearborn’s diverse population. Sitting between the birthplace of Henry Ford and the largest Islamic Center in the United States, this primarily residential neighborhood is home to a collection of Middle Eastern shops and restaurants and is surrounded by parks. “Some people live in the community just so their kids can learn a second language,” says Moussa Sobh, real estate agent with Empire Realty Group. “They can take them to church or mosque here. There are a lot of different people here.”

Clean, quiet and tree-lined streets
Sobh, who has sold homes in Oakman Grove for over twenty years, says the area’s known for its well-kept, quiet streets. “The city does a good job of keeping the streets clean,” Sobh says. “And there’s good security by the police.” Most of Oakman Grove’s streets are tree- and sidewalk-lined residential lanes with cottages, bungalows, and Tudor-style homes sitting on tenth-of-an-acre lots. The median home price is $234,900, up two percent from the previous year, but prices can range from $135,000 for roughly 1,000-square-foot bungalow and ranch-style homes to $500,000 for modern homes with more than 2,000 square feet. The median year homes were built in Oakman Grove is 1939, but many of the neighborhood’s older homes have been fully renovated, and homes built after 2000 are available occasionally.

Three miles south of Oakman Grove, the Ford Community Performing Arts Center also holds Dearborn’s annual Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony, where residents come together for sing-alongs, cookies and the lighting of the city’s Christmas tree.

Anthony and Hemlock parks
For pickup games, Oakman Grove’s sportier residents head to Anthony Park, where they can run the bases on the park’s baseball field, practice their field goals on the football field or set up the soccer goals for a neighborhood game. Further south, residents head to Hemlock Park to hit the splash pad on hot days or invite the family for a picnic under one of the park’s shelters.

Sidewalks and bus routes
With Detroit Department of Transportation bus stops along West Warren Avenue, Tireman Avenue and Schaefer Road, Oakman Grove residents can easily access Detroit’s public transit network. Sidewalks are prevalent throughout the neighborhood, so bus stops can be reached by a short walk from almost anywhere in the neighborhood. Just south of Oakman Grove, Ford Road connects to Interstate 94, allowing local drivers easy access to Detroit or West Michigan.
Train noise may require some adjusting
The southwest border of Oakman Grove is lined with railroad tracks, so noise is a consideration for homes closer to that section of the neighborhood. “The tracks don’t bother anyone living here, though,” Sobh says. “Maybe when they first look into the area, they’re concerned, but when they move in, they don’t mind it so much.”
