Big Bob Gibson Bar-B-Q has operated in Decatur since 1925, but the location less than two miles south of Westmead opened in 1992. The prestigious barbecue joint is famous as the home of Alabama white sauce. In the neighborhood, Waffle House is open for breakfast or late-night cravings, and Marlin’s Bar & Grill is a Mexican restaurant that uses robots to deliver food to tables. Carnegie Carnival is an homage to Mardi Gras
From October to the beginning of March, downtown Decatur hosts the Carnegie Carnival, a Mardi Gras-style celebration that spans several events. At Point Mallard Park, a city-run park east of its historic district, several festivals are held throughout the year, including the Alabama Jubilee Hot Air Balloon Classic held on Memorial Day weekend, when more than 60 hot air balloon pilots from across the region race through the skies.
