With a mixture of corn and soybean farmland, rolling pastures and dense woodland, Deerfield Township embodies small-town living and rural Michigan beauty. “I’ve always liked the area,” says Ray Hayes, Deerfield Township supervisor. “It’s a rural community with a little looser of a lifestyle. There’s no hustle and bustle of the city.” The township has one stoplight, located next to the town’s only grocery store, and the two main roads—Highway 24 and East Burnside Road—hold the few shopping and dining options within Deerfield.
Downtown Deerfield Township consists of Byran's Supermarket, town offices, and a few locally run shops.

Ranch homes and farmhouses
“We were looking for a larger property, and we were able to find a farm in Deerfield,” says Judy Buning, co-owner of Burning Farms. “And we’ve been here six years now.” With a median lot size of more than seven acres, Deerfield homes sit on largely level lots with enough space for farming. Farmhouses and ranch-style homes make up most of Deerfield’s architectural landscape, but the township’s lakeside homes take on more modern, cabin-like designs. Homes can sell as low as $150,000 for 1,200 square feet or as high as $500,000 for more than 2,000 square feet. The median home price is $270,000, up 16% from the previous year.

Schools with good marks
Students of Deerfield can start their education and enroll in pre-kindergarten through 4th grade at North Branch Elementary School, then progress to Ruth Fox Middle School for grades 5 through 8. Both schools earn grades of B on Niche. Offering a curriculum that focuses on science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics—STEAM—North Branch High School aims to prepare its students for high-paying technical jobs, earning a B-minus on Niche.

Driving is key
The two major thoroughfares of Deerfield are East Burnside Road and Highway 24, the latter of which holds Deerfield’s few businesses and restaurants. Deerfield has no public transportation, and the roads lack sidewalks, so a personal vehicle is essential for getting around town. “It’s usually a twenty-minute drive to get to a grocery store,” Buning says. “In the city, it takes 20 to 30 minutes to get anywhere because of traffic. In Deerfield, there is one light at Lapeer Road and North Branch. It takes twenty minutes to get anywhere because of the distance.”
Bryan’s Supermarket and Deerfield Inn
The town’s only grocery store is Bryan’s Supermarket on North Lapeer Road. For larger box stores like Walmart, residents must drive 10 miles south to Lapeer. Dining options are also limited, but the available options are well-loved by residents. “In North Branch, there’s North Branch Bar and Grill,” Buning says. “They have better food than some of the bigger, fancier places in the city.” On North Lapeer Road, the Deerfield Inn serves breakfast, burgers and pizza with a warm, homey vibe.
Locals visit the Deerfield Inn frequently for their daily specials.

Few parks, but nature everywhere
The town has few official parks, but the area is still conducive to outdoor living. On Falkenbury Road, Deerfield Park offers kids a grassy field and a playground. Just a few miles from the park, Sutter’s Recreation Area gives campers a wooded site to set up their RVs, swim and grill outdoors. For nature lovers just looking to get their steps in, the Myron and Isabel Zucker Memorial Nature Sanctuary sits on the west side of Deerfield and has a single, 1.3-mile loop trail that wanders through the East Michigan wilderness.

Big fireworks and community celebrations
Annual events in Deerfield center around national holidays, though the town events committee recently disbanded, leaving the events to be organized by the community. “We usually have a big parade for all the big holidays,” Buning says. “There are always fireworks too, and the fireworks show we have here is better than some of the city shows.”
