A rural neighborhood that stays busy with community events
Deerfield Township feels like a small countryside village with all the family-owned farms and spread-out homes, but it’s close to bigger southern New Jersey cities. “I think the location is very important," says Michelle Evans, a broker with The Roarke Agency who has 30 years of experience selling homes. "It's halfway between Bridgeton and Vineland, which have supermarkets and shopping centers, but you’re still in a township that’s a little more rural. A lot of people have lived in Rosenhayn for generations because they like being close to family and the schools.” Rosenhayn is the main residential area, surrounded by sprawling fields and dense collections of tall trees. The township strikes a balance between small-town living and staying connected with neighbors. “We’re a team of six here, and we’re not the kind of people who clock out at four, and you never hear from us again,” says DawnMarie Bascelli, the township administrator who has been a driving force for keeping the events calendar full. “We come in on Saturdays for the events, and some of us bake pies for the Friendsgiving Meal that we host every year at the township building. We still handle the regular state of the town issues, but organizing events that people enjoy is rewarding.” Deerfield Township keeps neighbors in this rural area connected with frequent community events and quick access to workplaces outside the town.

Events include Deerfield Day and Throwback Saturday Classic
Deerfield Township's staff are always working to bring the community together with monthly activities, such as free yoga classes, movie nights and concerts. “We try to focus on traditional events that keep our kids engaged in their community, in addition to annual events like Deerfield Township Day and our annual Throwback Saturday Classic Cruisin Car Show at LoBiondo Park. We also hold an annual holiday tree lighting at the Township Building, which we change a little each year. This year it will feature a free ice-skating rink and a 'snowball' pit for safe snowball fights!” Bascelli highlights how the township makes all the events accessible for residents. “Every event we do has a free component,” Bascelli says. “You might pay for a ticket for the Rosenhayn Fire Department’s famous barbecue chicken, but the live band, booths and inflatables are free to enjoy. We partner with local businesses to run our events on sponsorships and donations. It's great because the businesses love it, and we don’t charge people in the township for an event they may not want to participate in.” CAP Index gives the township a 2 out of 10 crime score, lower than the national average of 4.
Enjoying spacious yards and living near farms in Deerfield Township
The sidewalk-free streets of Rosenhayn hold the majority of homes, while the rest are spread out near farmland. Homes with around 2,000 square feet often sell for $325,000 to $550,000, while smaller properties can range from $175,000 to $325,000. “The newer two-story homes were built about 15 years ago, but there are also older ranchers and bungalows,” Evans says. “I believe all homes in Deerfield run on well water and septic tanks.” One thing most have in common is large yards that create a buffer between properties so neighbors don’t feel stacked on top of one another. There are no HOAs, so residents aren’t restricted when it comes to renovations, and homes run on well water and septic tank systems due to the more rural setting. Karen Seifrit, the township clerk, mentions the smell of fertilizer from the nearby farms can be strong at times, especially during the planting and harvest seasons, but the access to farm-to-table produce outweighs the occasional smell.

Driving to work in Bridgeton, Vineland and beyond
While Deerfield Township is primarily a farming community, some residents drive 8 miles into Vineland or 6 miles to Bridgeton for work. Both routes take about 15 minutes using Landis Avenue. “The biggest employers are the prison system in Bridgeton, the Inspira Hospital in Vineland and the other Inspira campus down Route 55 in Mulligan," Evans says. "And, of course, the schools, too.” Residents who want to spend time on Cape May beaches merge onto Route 55 before continuing the 50-mile drive south. Due to Deerfield’s rural layout, there are no public bus systems, so owning a car is essential to getting around town. There are multiple churches here, including Saint Mary’s Church, which was established in 1914 and built the current chapel in the 1970s.
Deerfield is about 6 miles to Bridgeton and 8 miles to Vineland via Landis Avenue.

Specialty academies at Cumberland Regional
Deerfield Township School earns a C-plus from Niche and offers prekindergarten through eighth-grade classes. Students continue to learn at Cumberland Regional High School, which earns an A. Cumberland Regional offers specialized academies kids can apply to, including the biomedical life sciences and business academies. Another option for high school is the Cumberland County Technical Education Center, which also earns an A.

Exploring LoBiondo Park and camping at Parvin State Park
Rosenhayn features the township’s two main parks. Deerfield Township holds beginner tennis lessons at LoBiondo Park on the fenced-in courts, near the playground equipment and paved basketball courts. There's also a bandstand for seasonal concerts, and a new pickleball court will be added in 2025. The Eugenia Johnson Memorial Park is more spread out, with picnic tables around the pine trees, playground and basketball court. Both parks feature walking trails to get steps in Youth and senior leagues compete at Campani’s Legacy Lanes, a township staple since it was built in 1958, which also hosts the Deerfield Township's Free Family Bowling Night in February. The Union Lake Wildlife Management Area, south of the township, features a boat ramp for those who want to sail out onto Union Lake and fish for largemouth bass or simply enjoy a serene moment in nature. Parvin State Park Lake is a popular fishing and camping spot in the north.

Supporting Deerfield Township farmers
Most local farms sell flowers and vegetables wholesale, but Iaconelli Farms is different. The farm has been family-owned since its founding over 75 years ago, growing raspberries and blackberries that are often ready to harvest in early July. Anyone can call the farm to order fresh berries for a pick-up or delivery order. Terra Nonno Winery offers wine-tasting tours and hosts food and music events on the weekends, while Cedar Rose Vineyards accepts walk-ins when locals want to sip wine with a custom charcuterie board while their dogs and kids play nearby. The closest grocery stores are the CTown Supermarket and Save a Lot in Bridgeton. Speranza’s Deli & Pizza, near Dollar General, serves breakfast, lunch and dinner from Tuesday to Saturday. Evans recommends Maplewood III in Vineland for Italian dishes with handmade pasta.
