Delafield is one of Lake Country's main commuter hubs
Among the lake-dotted suburbs, the small city of Delafield offers abundant local conveniences and freeway access to larger cities in the area. “People like to live in Lake Country because it’s halfway between Madison and Milwaukee,” says the JJ Hausmann Team, which has sold dozens of properties in the area. “Delafield’s downtown area has good walkability and lots of restaurants and shops, and proximity to the freeway is great.” This city is not to be confused with its neighbor, the Town of Delafield, although these communities share access to both parks and major highways. The Lake Country Industrial Park, on the city's northeast border, provides several employment opportunities to this community of about 7,000 people, while the jobs and entertainment in Milwaukee are 30 miles away.

Old and new homes sit along scattered lakes
Though Delafield’s oldest homes date to the 1920s and the majority were built in the second half of the 20th century, homebuilding has never stopped in this city. The newest properties, built as recently as 2024, ring around Delafield’s downtown area between Milwaukee Street and Wells Street. Condos throughout Delafield can cost between $200,000 and $560,000, while single-story properties built from the 1920s to 2000 tend to sell for between $300,000 and $750,000. Delafield’s most expensive properties tend to cluster around Nagawicka Lake and date to the 2010s and early 2020s. Newer homes over 3,000 square feet in size have sold for between $1 million and $2,950,000. Much of Delafield consists of subdivisions like Nagawicka Lake Heights and Lake Country Estates, where houses sit along winding lanes flanked by expansive yards and often lacking sidewalks. With a median home price of $627,000, the city of Delafield is less expensive than the neighboring Town of Delafield, which has a median sale price of $815,000.

Lake Country can be explored by boat, bike or foot
Delafield’s location in Lake Country creates plenty of opportunities for outdoor recreation. “Depending on the lake, anyone with access to a public launch can go boating. People like to park at sandbars and go swimming,” the JJ Hausmann Team says. The 981-acre Nagawicka Lake occupies around a quarter of Delafield, and its waters are open to boating from Naga-Waukee Park’s boat launch. The county allows for the catch-and-release fishing of bass, catfish, whitefish and many other species year-round. Naga-Waukee Park also includes the War Memorial Golf Course, which makes its 200-acre and 18-hole championship golf course open to the public. The 1,200-mile-long Ice Age National Scenic Trail runs through this park, following the path of an Ice Age glacial drift. “The Ice Age Trail is very popular; everyone uses that for walking, running, biking and skateboards,” the JJ Hausmann Team says. This trail also connects Naga-Waukee Park in the east to the Fish Hatchery Sports Complex in western Delafield. Here, a baseball field and two volleyball fields sit beside the city’s Fish Hatchery Building and just two blocks away from downtown. Small neighborhood green spaces like the Cushing Memorial Park, named for a family of three local Civil War heroes, include playgrounds and spaces for lakefront strolls.
Boaters, swimmers, sailors, and anglers will find fun on the clear waters of Nagawicka Lake in Delafield.

Delafield’s small Main Street shopping district is home to more than a dozen local restaurants and boutique shops. A tuxedo shop sits across the street from a health foods café, while the Mexican-themed Mazatlan Restaurant is next door to a small hair salon. Revere’s Wells Street Tavern is locally known for its “Burger Mondays” and its “Fish Fry Fridays,” attracting up to 700 guests on busy nights. The Belfre Kitchen has converted an 1868-built Presbyterian church into a venue for New American food. Downtown has a limited selection of food shopping options like a deli and a gourmet grocery store while also hosting the occasional Delafield Farmers Market. However, both Milwaukee Street and Interstate 94 connect downtown Delafield to the Nagawaukee Shopping Center, where big-box retailers like Home Depot, Target and Albrecht’s Sentry Foods and plenty of chain restaurants are available.
