Fort Logan offers convenience and recreation on an old base

Named for the military base that was built in the neighborhood in 1887, Fort Logan is a south Denver community with late 20th-century homes, nearby walking trails and easy access to Highway 285. The site was chosen for its high ground nearly 150 years ago and, today, residents benefit from panoramic views of Marston Lake and the nearby Rockies. The area has a laid-back suburban feel, with walkable, tree-lined streets leading to small community parks, bus stops and the businesses of Lowell Boulevard.

A wide array of home prices on the market

Fort Logan has a wide range of housing styles and price points, and most homes were built between the 1960s and 1990s. “It’s a very diverse area, especially because you are right on the line between Englewood, Littleton and Lakewood," says Kimber Dempsey, a real estate agent with Realty One Group Premier. Colonial Revivals, brick ranch-style homes and split-levels are common, with a handful of expansive estate-style homes with over 5,000 square feet surrounding the Pinehurst Country Club. Many properties feature fenced-in back yards and mature trees that provide a degree of privacy between neighbors. While most single-family homes start in the low $400,000s and reach the low $900,000s, luxury homes near the country club often fetch over $1 million. The neighborhood also offers a selection of condos, with units ranging from the low $100,000s to the mid-$300,000s.

Public schools nearby, and what to know about open enrollment

The neighborhood is served by Denver Public Schools, and many parents walk their kids to the local Kaiser Elementary School in the mornings. Like all Colorado Districts, DPS offers an open enrollment program, allowing families to apply to schools outside of their assigned attendance zone. Here’s what potential buyers should know:

  • The first round of enrollment is based on a lottery system, where families rank their top options and are matched based on preference and as space allows.
  • Priority is given to students living inside of a school’s attendance zone, those with siblings at the preferred school, and students with family members on staff at the preferred school.
  • If attending a school outside of their attendance zone, transportation to and from school is the family’s responsibility.

Trails and recreation spaces near Fort Logan

When it comes to recreation, there are many options within Fort Logan. Bear Creek Park offers open space, a playground and access to the 12-mile Bear Creek Trail. Also in the neighborhood, the Sheridan Community Center is home to a skate park, a playground, a fitness center and indoor basketball courts. “Most of the residents are members of Pinehurst Country Club,” says Bob Kelly, broker with Kentwood Real Estate DTC, who has been in the industry for over 40 years. “I’m also a member. There are even different levels of membership. You can have access to certain amenities like the swimming pools and tennis courts, or have access to the different golf courses.” Non-members can play at the nearby Broken Tee Golf Course, which is open to the public. The neighborhood is also home to the 214-acre Fort Logan National Cemetery.

Commuting downtown and across Denver

Route 85 and Highway 285 provide access to the greater Denver metro area, with downtown just 9 miles north. “The location and proximity to the mountains are one of the biggest draws of Fort Logan,” says Kelley. “I can head downtown for a play or a game within 20 minutes or enjoy a mountainside picnic within 15 minutes.” You can also find Regional Transportation District bus stops along Lowell and Federal boulevards. RTD also operates a local light-rail system, with the Oxford – City of Sheridan station a short drive east. “It’s a very car-centric area, but people have been using the light rail more and more,” Dempsey says.

  • Monaghan’s Bar and Grill offers a mix of Mexican and American fare, plus beer and cocktails that can be enjoyed alongside a game of pool.
