Problems with industry, but plans for greenery
Occupied by heavy industrial facilities that have made the neighborhood’s air quality worse than 87% of other Detroit neighborhoods, Boynton is in the process of substantial change. Adjacent to Boynton is Marathon Petroleum, an oil refinery plant that has faced numerous fines for environmental violations that have caused foul odors throughout the neighborhood and even forced some residents to remain inside their homes. “A lot of people who already had health issues had problems,” says Debra, a 44-year resident of Boynton. “But I haven’t had any problems.” In response to criticism from residents living near the plant, Marathon has begun purchasing homes in the area for demolition, indicating they plan to develop a buffer of green space between the plant and the neighborhood’s residential areas. But residents like Debra are happy to stay. “Those that took the offers, I think they were ready to go,” Debra says.

Bus stops, city sidewalks and Interstate 75
The Detroit Department of Transportation operates bus stops along South Fort Street, West Outer Drive and Schaefer Highway. On the west side, Interstate 75 separates Boynton from the nearby neighborhood of Melvindale. By way of I-75, downtown Detroit is just under ten miles from Boynton. On days with the best air quality, walkers of Boynton have plenty of room to traverse the area, as sidewalks line most of the neighborhood’s streets.
A rising median home price
Homes in the neighborhood’s north side are being bought up and torn down by Marathon Petroleum, but the southern section of the neighborhood is still full of options. Boarded-up homes aren’t uncommon, though sections of the neighborhood hold well-maintained homes on tree-lined streets, and the median home price has increased to $64,000, up 28% from the previous year. Bungalows and ranch-style homes are predominant throughout the neighborhood, with split levels and funky Tudor-influenced Colonials adding a little variety to the architectural landscape. Prices can sink as low as $7,500 and reach as high as $106,000.

Local soul food options
Shopping options within Boynton are limited, but Debra says fresh groceries aren’t far away. “I go to Kroger in Lincoln Park,” she says. “That’s just on the outskirts of where I’m at.” Corner stores like Quik Mart supply the neighborhood with snacks and other grab-and-go items, and Fish Station gives residents a local stop to pick up fresh seafood and hot meals. Ella Mae’s Place and MooreSoul give Boynton residents options for soul food, and The Perfect Beat Lounge offers a place to saddle up to a bar and enjoy some live music.

Green spaces for improved health and community activities
In an effort to improve air quality in Boynton, numerous organizations teamed up to plant 240 trees in Kemeny Park in 2022. With amenities like trails and play equipment, the park is a staple green space for the community, and it’s also home to the Kemeny Park Recreation Center, where numerous community events are held throughout the year. Smaller Piwok Park has a basketball court for pickup games, a playground and an open multi-use field. The neighborhood will also be connected to Detroit’s upcoming Joe Louis Greenway, a 27-mile trail connecting neighborhoods and parks throughout Detroit.

Community events at Kemeny Park
“There’s always community events at the neighborhood recreation center,” Debra says. “And some of the surrounding parks and churches hold different functions.” The Kemeny Park Recreation Center hosts a full calendar of local events like jewelry-making classes, math lessons for young children, family karaoke nights and youth cooking classes. Besides local events, Boynton sits 10 miles south of downtown Detroit, putting its residents close to citywide events like the Marche Du Nain Rouge parade, which celebrates the advent of spring.

Risk of flooding and certain crimes
Besides poor air quality, Boynton has a severe risk of flooding over the next 30 years, with projections indicating that 74% of properties face potential flooding in that time period. Crime is another problem for the community. The overall CAP Index Score is 6, but the homicide-specific score is 10, indicating the neighborhood comes with a high risk. Despite these challenges, residents like Debra remain committed to Boynton. “There’s crime,” she says. “But I would take this area over a lot of other places.”
