Historic homes and local businesses fill Claytown, a former mining hub
Located along Southwest Detroit’s border with the cultural oasis of Dearborn, the neighborhood of Claytown is itself a hub of culture and conveniences. Claytown is not only home to a thriving food scene and to amenities from highways to grocery markets, but also to a competitive housing market reflecting this neighborhood’s desirable features. Claytown owes its name to the Old West End’s former clay mines, an industry long forgotten by residents of the Motor City. However, that industrious spirit has never escaped this community. Where miners once mined is now a neighborhood awash with family-owned businesses and hundreds of historic homes.
Craftsman and bungalow homes reflect a century of housing growth
Craftsman, Foursquare and bungalow homes, some of them built as early as 1918, line Claytown’s grid-patterned streets and serve as visible reminders of the area's long history. The best of Claytown’s story is not yet behind it, however. Realtor Robert Ross of eXp Realty says, “With clear signs of community development and revitalization plans throughout the surrounding Warren-Livernois area, this is an investor’s dream.” The housing market is just as promising as the local economy; Claytown’s housing stock has seen refurbishment that has bolstered the neighborhood’s desirability. Ross says, “It’s a diamond in the rough with several recent upgrades and construction.” Homes in Claytown sell for $70,000 to $100,000, well above the city average, and reflecting this neighborhood’s manifold features.
Diverse cuisines and a historic drive-in theater are close to home
Among Claytown’s greatest strengths is the diversity of character it offers to the surrounding area. Wherever you turn, whether it’s along the retail corridor of McGraw Avenue or down the occasional side street, you will find an abundance of restaurants with a family feel to them. Treat yourself to tacos from the Señor Lopez Taqueria or any of the near-dozen Mexican restaurants serving up delicious dishes from every corner. For round the clock comfort food, visit Telway Hamburgers for a burger or even the Canadian classic, poutine. For a fun evening out, catch a movie the classic way at the Ford-Wyoming drive-in movie lot, established in 1950. This drive-in is the last of its kind in Metro Detroit and one of only nine in the entire state, ensuring a unique movie-viewing experience.
Dingeman and Romanowski parks support active athletic lifestyles
Claytown also offers its residents plenty of spaces for outdoor recreation, including Romanowski Park, whose six soccer fields, three basketball courts, and other sports facilities invite sporty types to get their game on. Dingeman Park, which sits beside the local elementary school, includes wide open spaces for field sports.
Diversity and athletics are important at nearby schools
Students attend the C-rated Munger Elementary-Middle School and Western International High School. Niche.com ranks Western among the top 25% most diverse public high schools in the state, as well as among the top 40% high schools in athletics and teaching quality.
Claytown is only 5 miles from downtown Detroit
Residents live a straight shot away from downtown Detroit; Highway 12 takes commuters directly into the heart of the city, just 5 miles down the road. Interstate 94 provides access to the rest of Detroit should one wish to explore the city’s museums and other neighborhood’s food scenes.
