Nothing embodies the resilience of North End Detroit quite like Parks Old Style Bar-B-Q, which has been part of the neighborhood for nearly 50 years. The Parks family founded the eatery in 1964. Terry and Verna Parks built the restaurant at 7444 Beaubien St. after Parks Old Style Bar-B-Q was incorporated in 1977, just as Detroit began to show the devastating effects of blight. Nevertheless, the iconic barbecue spot symbolized stability in the neighborhood. Today, as North End revitalizes like much of the area surrounding Downtown Detroit, Parks Old Style continues to dish out soul food favorites. “Many are discovering the untapped potential of the North End,” says Matthew Talbot, founder and team leader of The Talbot Team of RealRealty. “It’s a neighborhood bursting with energy and opportunities.” With familiar businesses like Parks settled in and the rapid big-money development happening downtown Detroit, people are paying closer attention to available property in the surrounding areas, like the North End. “I used to get a lot of blight calls from that area, but there’s a difference now,” says Detroit Police Officer Brad Hawkins. “People are looking at the available housing and property now before the prices go up.” Although the area is seeing rapid change, the CAP Index crime score is 9 out of 10, which indicates high crime — in particular, homicides and assaults with a weapon.
