Hope Valley offers a quiet community close to Durham destinations

Hope Valley is a historic and lush neighborhood in Durham. Residents are surrounded by tall shade trees, some of the city’s busiest shopping sites and routes to major employers, like Duke University. The area is centered around the Hope Valley Country Club, but there are also public spaces like Southern Boundaries Park nearby. Commuters who settle in Hope Valley have plenty of ways to relax close to home and still enjoy an easy drive to work.

Homes like bungalows to grand estates

The community has homes built during the 1920s through the past decade. “Home prices are affordable when you’re looking at Durham as a whole,” says Charles Davies, broker and realtor of Davies Real Estate Group with Keller Williams Elite Realty. Davies is based in Durham but also sells in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Townhouses and bungalows might sell in the low $100,000s to low $500,000s. Contemporary builds can range in the high $500,000s to high $900,000s, while grand Cape Cods and Colonial Revivals go for $1 million to $4 million. Some of the most expensive homes in the area don’t have HOAs, but subdivisions like Hope Valley Farms charge around $30 a month, while Dunbarton charges around $405.

Taking brief commutes to job hubs around Durham

Most residents drive to get around the area, but commutes are short thanks to the proximity to many of Durham’s major destinations. “It’s a very convenient location,” Davies says. “You can get to the Southpoint mall easily. You can get to Chapel Hill pretty easily, the airport easily. Everything is almost in a 10- to 15-minute drive.”
Commuters in the area might drive:

  • 4 miles to Duke University and its hospital, one of the city's leading employers for education and medical science.
  • 8 miles to jobs in the Research Triangle Park.
  • 9 miles to Chapel Hill, home of University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
  • 13 miles to Raleigh-Durham International Airport.
Dedicated cyclists might bike along the sidewalks and bike lanes that follow Hope Valley Road and University Drive to downtown. Regardless of how you get around, the community makes it easy to reach where you need to go.

Attending public schools before heading to private Duke University

The area is part of the highly rated Durham Public Schools district, which offers a lottery system for admission to charter or magnet schools, like the Durham School of Technology. Some families choose private options like the Montessori School of Durham. Nearby Duke University, one of the top private colleges in the state and nation, is also a draw to the neighborhood.

Hope Valley is centered on recreation, with parks nearby

The neighborhood was developed around the Hope Valley Country Club, a private 18-hole course that opened in the late 1920s. Members play on the course designed by accomplished architect Donald Ross. Others might go for a swim in the outdoor pool or compete against friends on the tennis or pickleball courts. There are also plenty of recreation options nearby that don't require membership, including:

  • Southern Boundaries Park, for tennis, baseball and basketball, plus space for picnicking
  • Garrett Road Park for tennis, trails and a playground
  • Third Fork Creek trail, a paved path for walking and running
For time indoors, the Southwest Regional Library offers programs for all ages. Adults might sign up for the Social Stitchers sewing group while kids enjoy story time.

Where you can go to dine out or shop

Hope Valley residents are a short drive from some of Durham’s main shopping areas. You can go to South Square to shop at Target or get groceries at Sam’s Club or Harris Teeter. The Streets at Southpoint mall is also nearby. “It’s close to Highway 40 and Fayetteville Street. It’s huge; it’s amazing," says Davies. "Every single store you can think of is there; every single restaurant you can think of is there.”

Many residents also head to Downtown Durham, which is full of breweries, bars and a range of restaurants. Mothers & Sons Trattoria makes its mark on the downtown scene with handmade pasta, while Alley Twenty Six pairs a lengthy cocktail menu with charcuterie and small plate options. After eating, you can catch a show at the Durham Performing Arts Center or a minor league baseball game at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
