Rockwood offers calm streets and quick access to downtown
Rockwood is a quiet neighborhood in Durham, known for its midcentury homes and convenient location. The community was developed in the 1920s as one of the area's first suburbs built around car travel rather than streetcars, with University Drive providing a 2-mile drive north to downtown. You don't have to go that far for popular shops and restaurants, though, as several locally owned businesses line Durham-Chapel Hill Boulevard. Streets shaded by mature oaks give the area a peaceful, leafy feel, and a nearby park enhances the community's natural setting.

Tree-lined streets and classic homes shape Rockwood's appeal
The towering trees and winding streets of Rockwood create a serene setting. "It has beautiful tree-lined streets, and the homes have a lot of charm and character," says Jenny Barber, a Realtor with Allen Tate who has 20 years of experience. The area features mostly single-family homes, along with some townhouses. Craftsman bungalows, Cape Cods and ranch-style homes give the area a consistent midcentury look, with the occasional Colonial Revival or Tudor-style house adding variety. The median year built is in the early 1970s, and many homes have seen recent updates and renovations. Barber adds that Rockwood attracts buyers looking to plant roots. "You've got turnover of people who've lived there since the 1950s and 1960s," she says. When it comes to costs, prices typically range from the upper $300,000s to the upper $700,000s.
