A sense of community in Siesta Acres

Life looks different by the U.S.-Mexico border, but it’s a difference that Siesta Acres embraces. A census-designated place of around 1,800 people, Siesta Acres is a fully developed residential area 3 miles north of Eagle Pass. While border crossings are facilitated at the Eagle Pass International Bridge by the Rio Grande, Siesta Acres enjoys a special relationship with Piedras Negas in Coahuila as Eagle Pass' sister city. Every March, they celebrate their collaboration across borders through the International Friendship Festival where they end the ceremony in a warm abrazo, or “embrace.” “We have a very good relationship with our sister city,” Aranda Real Estate owner Romelia Aranda says. “We are two communities that have a bridge and a river that runs through the middle of us. But without that, we are one community.”

Southwest transit through Route 277

Public transportation in Eagle Pass is provided by the Southwest Area Regional Transit District, which runs a fleet of 52 buses that can be reserved 24 hours in advance. Siesta Acres is also conveniently located directly east of U.S. Route 277, which runs 52 miles north into Del Rio. The closest 24-hour urgent care is 4 miles south at Stat Specialty Hospital. “Everything is five-to-10 minutes away,” Aranda says. “You just drive a few minutes, and you get to wherever you want.”

Brick homes along Siesta and Tina Drive

Traditional and contemporary houses in the area were mainly built in the 1990s and are situated along street grids by Siesta and Tina Drive. Most are midsized one-story homes with fenced yards, grassy patches and less than one-acre lots. Brick homes smaller than 2,000 square feet will be priced between $150,000 and $250,000, while three-bedroom homes with kitchen and dining room combos are around $250,000 and $350,000. Families take care of their properties here and usually pass them on to their children. “There’s a sense of unity among the families that live there,” Aranda says. “It’s a close-knit community.”

Limited retail selections along the highway

While most shopping and dining is going to be at Mall de las Aguilas in Eagle Pass, Siesta Acres does have a few retail establishments of its own west of the highway. Dining in the area involves a couple of taquerias and Mexican restaurants, as well as a Wok N Roll Asian fusion food truck and Texas Church’s Chicken. Local retail mainly consists of automotive shops, dollar stores and fireworks warehouses, as well as a couple of convenience stores in Chevron, Valero and Exxon.

Gone fishing for parks and recreation

There aren’t many public spaces within Siesta Acres itself. In fact, the closest playground is 2 miles south at Pasquale DeBona Park, which has soccer fields and a skatepark. Aside from driving to Eagle Pass to visit its 15 parks, the only other recreation to be had near the community are small events held at the Seco Mines Community Center. A few residents will occasionally venture a mile west to fish for bass and catfish at Elm Creek.

The educational path to Eagle Pass High School

Siesta Acres is zoned for two elementary schools in Eagle Pass ISD. Seco Mines Elementary serves first-through-sixth-grade students and earned a C-plus on Niche, while Pete Gallego Elementary has an 18-to-1 student-teacher ratio and a C. Eagle Pass High and Junior High serve the city at large and respectively earned B and C-plus ratings.
