Highway hub with close-by community

About halfway between New York City and Philadelphia, East Windsor is a step away from the city without sacrificing a short commute. “Overall lifestyle balance is wonderful,” says Lieutenant Colonel Chris Norton, an East Windsor resident and real estate agent at Keller Williams of Princeton, “there’s an excellent mix of what home buyers want-- good schools, shopping, and close to everything.” The neighborhood is hemmed in by major highways including US 130, the New Jersey Turnpike, and Interstate 95. It is a sister city to Hightstown and is often mentioned in the same breath. East Windsor's proximity to diverse communities creates an equally diverse culinary scene, exemplified by its assortment of Indian restaurants.

Cul-de-sacs and spacious backyards are in style

Homes in East Windsor feature spacious backyards that are hard to come by in the nearby cities. Tucked-away streets and cul-de-sacs accommodate small playground sets and sheds. The fenced-in yards and a 25-mph speed limit allow kids and pets to play safely. These properties tend to sell quickly and above the listing price. A one-bedroom, one-bathroom condo could sell for as low as $100,000, while larger four-bedroom houses can sell for $465,000 to $865,000. It’s common to see townhouses, split-level and colonial architecture in single-family homes built between 1960 and 1990.

Accessible public transportation to New York and Philly

Driving is essential to get around East Windsor, but public transportation options aren’t very far. “It’s 10 minutes from the regional train line between New York and Philly,” says Norton. “It’s also 15 minutes from downtown Princeton, about 30 minutes from points along the Delaware River and 40 minutes from the Jersey Shore.” The Princeton Junction Shuttle commuter bus travels from East Windsor to the Princeton Junction Train Station.

Big box stores and local breweries

Chain stores like Target and T.J. Maxx can be found at East Windsor Village, right off US 130. Town Center Shopping Center, with CVS and Dollar Tree, is also close-by. In the evenings, locals duck into the beer garden and taproom at Old Hights Brewing Company in Hightstown. For dining with a view, Tavern on the Lake is a popular Hightstown spot with live music and drag shows. A four-mile or seven-minute drive away is Working Dog Winery. As the name suggests, well-behaved dogs are welcome.

“Jurassic” parks in East Windsor

Anker and Wiltshire Park roar with children’s laughter as they play on the dinosaur-themed playground equipment. At Anker Park, animals that aren’t prehistoric, like ducks, can be found wading into the creek, and residents can stay out of the sun at the covered picnic tables. A paved walking path weaves through Wiltshire’s tennis and basketball courts, playground and swing set.

Farm-fresh Thanksgiving at Lee's Turkey Farm

While East Windsor isn’t known as a destination town, people from up and down the East Coast drive to Lee’s Turkey Farm to get their Thanksgiving birds. Farmers give guided tours and visitors can pick their own fruits and vegetables.

Local taxes are put to good use

As is the case in most of New Jersey, residents of East Windsor pay high taxes, according to Norton. However, he adds that local taxes are put to good use to protect green spaces and keep the neighborhood's character.

GreatSchools: The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
