Canutillo
New and old homes on large lots
There are a variety of homes in Canutillo, with some dating back to the 1940s and others that are new builds with 21st-century modern designs. Brightly colored Spanish Revivals and Craftsman homes with front gables and garages usually cost around $250,000 to $375,000. There are also stucco ranch-style homes with four bedrooms and over 2,000 square feet. These single-story properties can get expansive, yet are less expensive and cost around $100,000 to $150,000. “You have areas where the homes are bigger and nicer on large lots, and smaller home areas too,” Acuna says. “The median price is probably somewhere between $180,000 and $220,000 for the smaller homes.”B-rated Canutillo public schools
Families living in the area can send their kids to schools within the Canutillo Independent School District. Canutillo Elementary is known as “Canutillo’s First” with its history dating back to the early 1900s. The elementary school, along with Canutillo Middle and Jose J Alderete Middle School, maintains a B-minus grade on Niche. Canutillo Middle School is a STEAM academy with several classes that can earn students high school and even college-level credit. From there, students can attend Canutillo High School. Ranked No. 34 in Best Public High Schools in El Paso Area by Niche, the school has a B grade and offers AP courses and a Pathways in Technology program for early college credit.Canutillo’s outlet mall and local restaurants
Canutillo is a mix of commercial and residential spaces. There are a handful of restaurants throughout the neighborhood, and The Outlet Shoppes at El Paso offers over 100 popular brand stores to explore, along with a kids’ playground, splash pad and food court. Add to your closet with options from Old Navy, Ann Taylor, Brooks Brothers, Michael Kors and more. When grabbing a bite to eat, check out all the local businesses along Doniphan Drive and Talbot Avenue. Little Diner serves Mexican and Southwestern classics like gorditas, enchiladas and house-made salsa with fresh cilantro. Further south, Tamales Lupita is a popular mom-and-pop known for its Chicharron dish and wide selection of tamales. Those who prefer cooking at home can get their groceries at the family-owned Rio Grande Supermarket. When looking for a weekend adventure, spend the day at Zin Valle Vineyards, where visitors can enjoy live music, wine tastings and a beautiful patio. With El Paso’s wine-making history dating back to the 1660s, the vineyard produces highly rated wines that reflect its Spanish and Italian roots.Community park with outdoor amenities
When residents want to stretch their legs out, Gallegos Park is on the western side of the Rio Grande. The community’s green space offers plenty of recreational opportunities with its two baseball fields and four multi-use athletic fields. The playground area is covered and accessible to all abilities. Try out new tricks at the skate park, or cool off on hot summer days at the Canutillo Pool with its water slides. “It’s quite a big park with lots of events,” Acuna says. Residents can experience everything from hot air balloons to car shows at Gallegos Park.Traveling around north of El Paso
With the Rio Grande splitting the Canutillo neighborhood in half, many residents use their own vehicles to travel around the expansive area and get to restaurants and shops. Texas State Route 28 cuts through the western side of Canutillo and Interstate 10 follows the eastern edge of the neighborhood, giving commuters two different pathways to leave the area – Interstate 10 can take drivers all the way into El Paso. In a medical emergency, residents will have to travel 13.7 miles to get to Las Palmas Medical Center located downtown.
