An agricultural borderland

Set between El Paso, Texas and Las Cruces, New Mexico, La Union is a small farming community on Highway 28, surrounded by miles of vineyards, orchards and pepper fields. “Residents here love the simplicity and quiet of living among just land, homes and farms," says Jessica Yu Ramos, El Paso resident of 25 years and real estate agent with Brokers Inc Real Estate Group, “It's mostly a residential area, but it’s next to Anthony and Vinton, communities that have more shopping and restaurant options.” For quick shopping, residents can head to the local La Union Mercantile within the neighborhood. For over a century, this southern Dona Ana County borderland has been home to generations of farmers and artisans; today, La Union's early 20th-century homes are still being passed down within families, and new construction has continued into the 2020s. The legacy of tradition and innovation is also reflected in La Union's small burgeoning wine industry, with local vineyards like La Vina leading the way in showcasing the region's terroir. Major highway Interstate 10 is about 10 miles south of the neighborhood, leading to El Paso, Texas.

Century-old homes to the west, new builds on the northeast

On the neighborhood's west side, two- and three-bedroom cottages, ranch-style houses and manufactured homes were built between 1900 and 1990 along partially paved roads. Prices for these westside homes range from $130,000 to $250,000, depending on their size and age; newer homes tend to cost more. In the neighborhood's northeast, Calle Delphia is a small subdivision of larger homes built between 2007 and 2021; these newer homes are either Mediterranean- or Pueblo Revival-style, with three to five bedrooms and layouts that range from 2,500 to 4,500 square feet. Prices for these Calle Delphia homes range from around $650,000 to $800,000, also depending on size and age.

Rio Grande wetlands and a seasonal maze

Set right in the neighborhood, the 13-acre La Union Corn Maze draws families from all over the county each spring and fall. "Honestly, La Union is pretty much known for its maze,” says Ramos. “In the spring, folks come for wagon rides and bounce houses. In the fall, it's all about pumpkin patches. It's just a really fun place to be, for kids and adults." About 13 miles away, the 52-acre Keystone Heritage Park includes an archaeological site and one of the El Paso area's two wetlands, which is home to almost 200 species of birds. Attached to the park, the El Paso Desert Botanical Gardens bloom with the Chihuahuan Desert’s native plants; also here is a children’s garden and an amphitheater.

Interstate 10 leads 20 miles east to Downtown El Paso, and about 30 miles west to Las Cruces. Highway 28 (Lou Henson Highway) runs north-south along the east side of the neighborhood, while Alvarez Road runs along the west side, merging 3 miles east with New Mexico Highway 273. Implemented changes after 2021 flood

La Union experienced severe flooding in August 2021, with nearly six inches of rain falling in just three days. To prepare for future floods, the city of New Mexico has introduced better storm tracking technology and a new rapid-response team.
