Palomino is 10 miles from Fort Bliss in northeast El Paso

Palomino is a residential neighborhood in northeast El Paso, about 5 miles east of Castner Range in the foothills of the Franklin Mountains. Castner Range was once a munitions training site for the Fort Bliss military base, and the area is still under U.S. Army management. Palomino is about 10 miles from Fort Bliss itself, and its highway access and well-rated schools appeal to military families. “The northeast has very easy access to Fort Bliss,” says Justin Cates, a Realtor with New Beginnings Realty who grew up in the region. “And you have immaculate views of the Franklin Mountains.”

Residential streets offer a blend of older homes and new construction

Palomino’s residential streets and cul-de-sacs are lined with sidewalks and young trees. Low stone walls and chain-link fences border many properties. Lots typically measure under 10,000 square feet, with paved driveways and patches of lawn. Most residents are renters, and a few apartment complexes can be found on the western side of the neighborhood. Small cottages, ranch-style homes and Cape Cods dating from the 1960s to the ’80s sell for $120,000 to $225,000. New Traditional homes from the early 2020s, many with Spanish influences and attached garages, sell for $250,000 to $400,000. “You’re in an established neighborhood, so those new homes already have infrastructure around them,” says Cates, who’s been selling in the city for nearly 10 years. “It’s not like the far east side of El Paso, where with new construction, the homes are there before the corner store.”

School choices include in-district, magnet and private options

Depending on their address, students might start at Parkland Elementary School, which receives a B-plus from Niche, or North Star Elementary, rated A-minus. Parkland Pre-Engineering Middle School receives a B-minus, and Parkland High School is rated B. The high school offers an early college program and STEM education courses. El Paso families can apply to magnet schools or seek out-of-district admission, but priority is given to in-boundary students, and lotteries and waitlists are enforced when schools reach capacity. The Texas Education Freedom Act, signed into law in 2025, provides eligible students with funding for private school tuition or other educational needs.

Local parks feature sports fields, playgrounds and spaces for pups

North Desert Park and Hidden Crown Park feature well-maintained playgrounds in the neighborhood’s northern section. Joey Barazza and Vino Memorial Park, about 3 miles away, has a dog park, creative playground equipment, sports fields and well-maintained walking trails. Residents are also within 14 miles of Franklin Mountains State Park, which offers over 100 miles of trails for hiking and mountain biking. Rock climbing and geocaching are other popular activities, and campsites are available for multiday trips.

Loop 375 connects residents to all areas of the city

McCombs Street and U.S. Route 54, also known as Dyer Street, are the area’s major thoroughfares, and buses on Sun Metro’s Northeast routes stop along both. Travelers have an 11-mile drive to El Paso International Airport, and it’s about 14 miles to downtown El Paso. Commuters can get around the city by hopping on the 375 Loop, which runs along the southern edge of Palomino and through the Franklin Mountains to the west. “One thing that’s interesting about that northeast section of town is that it’s really central to all of El Paso,” Cates says. “It reminds me of a hand, and northeast El Paso is the palm. You can be anywhere in town in 25 minutes.” Medical care is available about 3 miles away at The Hospitals of Providence Northeast Campus.

Fast-food chains and casual bars line Dyer Street

Most of the neighborhood’s commerce is located along Dyer Street. The smoked brisket at Willie’s Brew & Q earns high marks from locals, and Texas Stagecoach Saloon is a roadside honky-tonk with pool tables and a huge bar. Farther south, fast-food chains like Whataburger, Subway and Domino’s line the street. Groceries are available just outside the neighborhood at Bryant’s Market, but the Walmart on Transmountain Road offers more options about 4 miles away.

The Sunset Amphitheater is slated to open nearby in late 2026

The Sunset Amphitheater, a 12,500-seat venue, is expected to open by the end of 2026. The new theater is situated on the site of the former Cohen Stadium, about 4 miles from Palomino. City leaders expect the venue to host approximately 40 shows per year, thereby promoting job growth and attracting visitors to the area. Some residents have voiced concern about the potential increase in crowds and traffic.

Environmental issues include flooding and hot summer temps

Because of El Paso’s desert location and rocky soil makeup, neighborhoods like Palomino are prone to flash flooding during rainstorms. However, “the flooding is more in the streets, and not like houses underwater,” Cates says. “It’s not dangerous or damaging to people’s property per se — it’s just annoying.” Residents also contend with triple-digit temperatures in summer. Air quality is relatively poor throughout El Paso due to idling traffic at the U.S.-Mexico border, but since Palomino is about 12 miles from the nearest crossing, it’s not as much of an issue as in some neighborhoods.
