Pebble Hills offers comfort and convenience in Northeast El Paso

Set 13 miles east of Downtown El Paso, Pebble Hills is a laid-back suburb offering ranch-style homes and duplexes with prices below the national median. "You'll meet all your neighbors," says Declan Kesner, a real estate salesperson with Century 21 The Edge and an El Paso resident. "You'll see some walkers — it's a neighborhood." The community is primarily residential, with everyday conveniences clustered along its main thoroughfares, including restaurants, grocery chains and locally owned businesses. Pebble Hills also offers convenient access to Fort Bliss, 8 miles away, making it a suitable home base for military families. And, of course, there's the weather. "It's always sunny — no humidity," Kesner says. "A lot of people move here because of that."

Ranch-style homes and multifamily dwellings with Spanish details

Pebble Hills is primarily made up of late–20th-century ranch-style homes set along wide, sidewalk-lined streets. Red brick and white stucco exteriors are typical, often paired with attached garages, covered patios and low-maintenance rock gardens peppered by pygmy date palms or prickly pear cacti.

Multifamily properties are also typical, with more than 30% of residents renting. "It's built up with a bunch of duplexes," Kesner says. "You can live on one side, and maybe [the other side] brings in the income." Most duplexes follow the ranch style, though a few lean Spanish-inspired with terracotta-tiled roofs. Early-2000s condos round out the mix in the Pueblo Condominiums community, where monthly dues of about $180 cover lawn care and upkeep.

Depending on size and renovation needs, prices range from $130,000 to $320,000, with some duplexes reaching $420,000. The median sale price of $196,000 is below the national median.

Ysleta Independent School District gets an A-minus from Niche

Pebble Hills is part of the Ysleta Independent School District, which is ranked as the best school district in the El Paso area and has an overall rating of A-minus from Niche. Kids may start at Pebble Hills Elementary before moving to Eastwood Middle and J.M. Hanks High — all are rated B-plus. At the latter, teens may take dual-enrollment courses for credit at El Paso Community College.

Football, picnics and playground visits at Pebble Hills Park

Pebble Hills Park provides a relaxing setting for neighbors to enjoy the Texas sunshine. The dog-friendly park is popular for its shaded playground, picnic benches and football field. The Eastside Senior Citizens Center keeps the 55-plus crowd active with Zumba, line dancing and bingo. Three miles away, Hawkins Park offers an indoor pool, and right next door, the public 18-hole Lone Star Golf Course is known for its flat, forgiving layout that's friendly for beginners. Nearby, Edgemere Linear Park adds another recreational option with its 1.5-mile paved path popular among joggers and cyclists.

For a deeper escape into nature, Franklin Mountains State Park sits 25 miles away. The 24,000-acre preserve features more than 100 miles of trails, a designated rock climbing area and desert campsites tucked under the rugged peaks.

Locally owned restaurants with international flavors

Pebble Hills is primarily residential, but its main thoroughfares are lined with shopping centers that offer a mix of familiar chains and locally owned favorites, including nail salons, Planet Fitness and Old Major Comics. "Having it not be a new neighborhood helps — it's established," Kesner says.

Mejor Healthy kicks off the morning with protein-packed chai coffee and banana almond shakes. Mexican restaurants are abundant, yet Los Tres Gallegos stands out for its weekend breakfast buffet and classics such as chicken mole enchiladas. Residents have other international options as well — Shan Dong dishes out Hunan beef and honey-dipped bananas, while Anointed Cuisine offers jerk chicken and African tomato stew. For a quick bite, Frisco Burger offers hefty, butter-brushed burgers in a 1950s-style space complete with checkerboard floors and car-shaped booths. And for date night, Trattoria Bella Sera provides a refined setting for Italian staples like chicken cacciatore and spumoni — a layered chocolate, cherry and pistachio ice cream. Family Dollar and Food King cover grocery needs.

Pop culture events and WinterFest

Pebble Hills residents join in the fun of El Paso's traditions and celebrations throughout the year. Pop culture enthusiasts look forward to events like the El Paso Comic Con in May and the El Paso Film Festival. In December, WinterFest transforms Downtown El Paso into a holiday-themed wonderland, featuring Christmas lights, an ice skating rink and lively fiestas at San Jacinto Plaza.

U.S. Route 62, buses and pedestrian-friendly streets

U.S. Route 62 borders Pebble Hills and connects to Downtown El Paso. The neighborhood's thoroughfares, including Pebble Hills Boulevard and North Yarbrough Drive, are lined with Sun Metro and El Paso Transportation Authority bus stops. Overall, the neighborhood is considered pedestrian-friendly with sidewalks and bike lanes. El Paso International Airport is less than a mile away, and Kesner says noise isn't an issue. Edgemere Estates, an assisted living facility, is in the neighborhood, and Del Sol Medical Center, a general hospital, is 3 miles away.
