Roberts is a bustling suburban El Paso community with shops and restaurants
With several shopping centers and restaurants, the Roberts neighborhood of Northwest El Paso gives plenty of incentive for residents to stay close to home. And there is more to come: the city tore down Oran Roberts Elementary School in March 2025, clearing the way for a commercial development that will include a hotel, retail stores, restaurants and medical offices. Allison Dillard, a Realtor with Keller Williams Realty, says the change could significantly impact local property values, which are typically lower than in surrounding neighborhoods. “This has been an affordable area for a long time,” Dillard says. “It hasn’t had a reawakening yet, but that might be about to happen. It’s a good place to invest. In 10 years, people will be happy they did.”
Roberts is a suburban neighborhood in the heart of West El Paso Texas.
Oran Roberts Elementary School was recently demolished and rezoned to make way for newly constructed housing.

Ranch-style homes for below-average prices on walkable streets
The area mostly has ranch-style homes built in the 1960s and 1970s with brick and stucco exteriors. Houses can come with carports or garages and often list between $175,000 and $275,000. Dillard says these prices are much lower than on the eastern side of Interstate 10 or west of Doniphan Drive. Front lawns usually use gravel instead of grass, though yards can still have cacti and other small plants or trees. The neighborhood’s wide streets are flanked by sidewalks. There are also several apartments and condos for rent. The community has an overall CAP Index crime score of 7 out of 10, higher than the national average of 4. This score is driven by high scores for nonviolent crime.

Easy access to Interstate 10 and dust storms in the spring
Roberts is bordered by Interstate 10 to the east. Sun Metro operates a public bus system that makes several stops along Doniphan Drive, the area’s western border. Downtown is about 10 miles southeast, and El Paso International Airport is close to 20 miles away. Traffic is generally light outside of rush hour, but the new commercial development could bring more visitors to the area. Dust storms can kick up during the windy season of March and April. In the summer, temperatures can rise to 105 degrees or higher.
Roberts is served by multiple Sun Metro bus lines.

Mom-and-pop stores, big-box shopping centers and a variety of local restaurants
Roberts residents do not lack retail spaces to visit. “There are options in every direction, like the mom-and-pop shops on Doniphan Drive,” Dillard says. “There are a bunch of little clothing and jewelry stores.” For more common goods, the neighborhood’s Mesa Plaza center has big-box stores like Sam’s Club and Hobby Lobby among its tenants. Across North Mesa Street is Crossroads Village Shopping Center, which has a Food King, and the nearby West Ten Center had a Walmart Supercenter.
When hungry, people can visit Ke’ Flauta, which has individual and family-size platters of flautas covered in a variety of sauces. Pho & Rolls Vietnamese Kitchen simmers its broth for 24 hours before serving. 787 Coffee uses beans infused with spirits like rum and tequila — though the drinks themselves are nonalcoholic, as the spirits evaporate. It also offers classes on the art of pour-over brewing. Just north of the community, Little Bit of Texas is one of the city’s most popular line dancing bars. Dillard says the line to enter is often out the door.
Roberts residents can get their groceries from the local Sam's Club.
Athletic facilities, walking trails and a butterfly garden are nearby
The neighborhood has no green spaces of its own, but several are within a few miles. To the south, White Spur Park has a playground themed like a medieval castle and an open field for athletics. Westside Community Park, close to 3 miles away, has ball fields, walking trails, skating and biking zones, a pet area and a splash pad. It also houses Don Haskins Recreation Center, which has basketball, pickleball and volleyball courts and a dance studio among its amenities. The community is less than 2 miles from Montoya Heights Park, which has the city’s only butterfly and pollinator garden, a playground and a basketball court. Several churches sit in and around the area.
Roberts locals can play basketball and use the gym at the Don Haskins Recreational Center.
