Students stay inside the community to attend school until they enter high school, which is nearby in Sun Valley East. Far-off views of the mountainous Castner Range can be seen from most homes in the area.

Sun Valley West families are zoned for the El Paso Independent School District. In 2019, a local elementary and a middle school academy were leveled to make room for Bobby Joe Hill Pk-8. The school, with a $35.4 million funding budget, now sits inside the neighborhood. The Pk-8 school is unranked by Niche. Students graduate from Andress High, which has a C-plus.
Sun Metro provides bus stops along Rushing Road and Kenworthy Street. U.S. 54 leads to Downtown El Paso and the Bridge of the Americas border crossing in less than 15 miles. Heading north on the highway brings commuters to New Mexico. The nearest commercial airport is El Paso International. The summer months usher in dry heat and temperatures that can exceed 100 degrees. The area is prone to dust storms, especially during the late winter and spring. El Paso communities also face air pollution caused by idling traffic at the international border.
Around 2 miles to the north awaits Veterans Park. This El Paso green space has a dog park and skate park. The athletic fields host community league games for flag football, rugby and baseball. The recreation center offers an indoor gymnasium and a computer room. Arlington Park is a smaller outdoor space that's closer to the community. The basketball and tennis courts sit side-by-side. There is also an open field and a small playground. Franklin Mountains State Park, about 10 miles away, is a favorite spot for biking and hiking.
Shopping is found on Fairbanks Drive, which contains Valley Supermarket and fast-food restaurants. There are retail plazas about 2 miles away on Loop 375, also known as Woodrow Beam Transmountian Drive. Here, residents can access Walmart Supercenter and casual regional chains like The Shack Wings & Brews. At Tacotote!, patrons can pick up Mexican staples at the counter or drive-through.
Locals can easily access northeast El Paso events, such as the 9/11 Heroes Run El Paso, held at Veterans Park. The Mimbela Family NorthEaster Parade, an annual tradition for over 45 years, is one of the city's longest-running parades. Each year, a different theme is selected, and decorative floats line up in a procession that ends at Hercules Avenue, about 5 miles south.
