Located near one of Elkhart's busiest highway junctions

Near the busiest intersection on Elkhart’s southeast side—the junction of U.S. Routes 20 and 33—Homer is a neighborhood where residents and businesses capitalize on proximity to downtown Elkhart, Goshen or South Bend. Lizabeth Konkoe’s family opened Himmel Haus German Food in the neighborhood for exactly that reason. Konkoe says an estimated 35,000 vehicles drive past her business each day. “My mother selected that location to be close to many options,” Konkoe says. “It’s 20 minutes to the south side of South Bend. People don’t have enough time to travel far, so I tell them, ‘It’s close’ when they call to ask where we are.”

Access to Goshen via U.S. 33 and South Bend on the Saint Joseph Valley Parkway

The location is ideal for residents who work in Goshen or South Bend but would prefer living in Elkhart. U.S. 33 connects Homer 3 miles northwest to downtown Elkhart and 8 miles southeast to Goshen. Saint Joseph Valley Parkway, U.S. 20, heads 15 miles west towards South Bend, and just under 30 miles to South Bend International Airport. Public transportation is available on the Interurban Trolley Red Line, which runs between Elkhart and Goshen. Elkhart General Hospital is about 5 miles from the neighborhood.

Himmel Haus German Food and El Rosal Super Market reflect the multicultural neighborhood

Newcomers to Elkhart have made Homer their home for decades, and that is reflected in the businesses on Main Street. Konkoe says the area was largely German when Himmel Haus was established in the early 1960s. Newer businesses like El Rosal Super Market, Asia Market and International Bakery, an El Salvadorean bakery and restaurant, show how the neighborhood’s evolving multicultural flavor. More shopping and dining options are in nearby Dunlap, including Martin’s Super Market and local favorite Granma’s House of Pancakes.

Apartments and midcentury houses are common

Apartments account for more than half of the housing in Homer. Most houses in the neighborhood were built between the 1930s and 1970s, with bungalows, split-levels and ranch-style homes among the predominant styles. The average home size of around 1,400 square feet is less than the national average. Fixer-uppers are available for less than $120,000, while recent sales of move-in ready houses range between $150,000 and $180,000.

Neighborhood split between Elkhart and Concord schools

Many students in the neighborhood attend Elkhart Community Schools. Monger Elementary earns a C-plus rating from Niche. Pierre Moran Middle School gets a C rating. Elkhart High School earns a B-minus grade. Other neighborhood students are zoned to attend Concord Community Schools: C-rated Concord West Elementary, B-minus-rated Concord Intermediate, B-rated Concord Junior High and B-rated Concord Community High School.

Elkhart Environmental Center offers many ecosystems

Reclaimed and remediated from a former city dump, Elkhart Environmental Center is a 66-acre wildlife refuge about a mile from the neighborhood. The Environmental Center features nine trails, and a kayak launch into the Elkhart River. “It has many different ecosystems, from prairie to woods to ponds to wetlands,” says Jamison Czarnecki, Elkhart’s director of parks and recreation.

Halfway between events in Elkhart and Dunlap

Residents can head to downtown Elkhart for events and attractions like Wellfield Botanic Gardens, Elkhart Jazz Fest, and the Elkhart Grand Prix go-kart race. Ox Bow County Park in Dunlap hosts an annual Halloween Campfire, which has grown into a popular seasonal event that draws thousands of people for hayrides, pumpkin decorating, night hikes, and marshmallow roasting.

Important to know

The CAP Index rates crime in Homer a 6 out of 10, with certain violent crimes rating an 8. The national average is 4. In 2024, an EF-1 tornado caused damage just north of the neighborhood, including at Monger Elementary. One of the most destructive storms in American history, part of the 1965 Palm Sunday tornado outbreak, destroyed most of the homes in nearby Dunlap.
