A lakefront community near the Indiana-Michigan border
Simonton Lake is an unincorporated neighborhood built around its namesake lake between Elkhart and the Indiana-Michigan state line. The neighborhood provides residents with quiet, lakeside vibes minutes away from Interstate 90 and a busy shopping and dining district. “You have all the conveniences of the city,” says Annie Logan, a broker with Century 21. "But with more of a rural feel.” The transition becomes clear when traveling from the busy commercial area south of the neighborhood up to the state border, where the landscape changes dramatically. “It goes from hustle and bustle to complete prairie,” Logan says.
Various home styles, like bungalows, surround Simonton Lake.

Simonton Lake is the county's largest natural body of water
At more than 300 acres, Simonton Lake’s eponymous body of water is the largest natural lake in Elkhart County. Though the lake is managed by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, local organizations like the Simonton Lake Area Homeowners’ Association and the Simonton Lake Conservancy District are dedicated to keeping the lake clean and welcoming to wildlife, including the occasional bald eagle. From spring through fall, the lake is one of Elkhart’s busiest boating destinations, and most residents with lakefront homes have docks for their watercraft. Winters can be brutal just a stone’s throw from the Michigan border, but that’s embraced in Simonton Lake. When the lake freezes over, ice fishermen trudge out to their shanties, and neighborhood kids organize pick-up games of pond hockey. Snowmobilers also take to the lake when conditions allow for it.

From modest lakeside cottages to million-dollar manors
The most valuable homes in the neighborhood are on the shores of Simonton Lake itself, with several properties ranging between $600,000 and $1.2 million. But 20th-century cottages under 1,000 square feet are squeezed between newer homes around 4,000 square feet and sell in the $300,000-350,000 range. “It’s a nice area with a very wide mix of everything,” Logan says. “You have million-dollar homes next to some very small homes.” The neighborhood also has a wide array of houses that aren’t directly on the lake. Subdivisions with ranch-style and New Traditional houses built from the 1970s to the present take advantage of Simonton Lake’s tree-filled setting and range between $150,000 and $700,000.

Flippin' Cows, Smokin' Fatty's, and a 1960s throwback in-between
Flippin’ Cow, a lakeside bar and burger joint with ample dockside parking for boaters, is one of Simonton Lake’s signature establishments. The seasonal Simonton Lake Drive-In has been a neighborhood favorite for 60 years, serving homemade root beer in frosted mugs to go with burgers, hot dogs and other classic drive-thru fare. “They’ve always got cars parked there during the summer,” Logan says of the venerable vintage eatery. A busy shopping and dining area just south of Simonton Lake includes Martin’s Super Market, chain restaurants like Cracker Barrel and more local favorites, such as The Chubby Trout and Smokin’ Fatty’s BBQ.

Adjacent to Indiana Toll Road
Interstate 90, known as the Indiana Toll Road throughout the state, is less than 2 miles from the lakeshore. That puts the entire South Bend area within convenient reach for residents. “It’s a straight shot to Mishawaka, where our main shopping area and biggest mall is,” Logan says of the 14-mile trip. South Bend International Airport is about a 25-mile trip from Simonton Lake. Elkhart General Hospital is around 6 miles south of the neighborhood.
Simonton Lake Sportsman's Club active in community events
The Fourth of July is a major party on Simonton Lake, with fireworks colorfully lighting up the night sky and the lake’s shimmering surface. The Simonton Lake Sportsmen’s Club sponsors multiple events to benefit charities throughout the year, including casino nights, a poker run and a kids’ fishing tournament. The Sportsmen’s Club also has a gun range for members, so it is not unusual for residents in the eastern half of the neighborhood to hear the echo of distant gunshots.
