What gives Elm Grove its quiet, close-knit feel

Elm Grove is a village in eastern Waukesha County that maintains a quiet, suburban atmosphere with a strong community focus. People are also drawn to the area for its local green spaces and trails, and local shops and cafes are within easy reach of most homes. Seasonal gatherings and concerts in the park keep the community connected throughout the year, reinforcing the small-town feel that has defined the area for more than a century.

What buyers can expect from prices and space in this area

Homes in the area were mostly built in the 1970s and onward, and their designs reflect that. Contemporary ranch-style houses and Cape Cods rub shoulders with custom-built estates. Neighborhoods are spread out, with few dense developments and a handful of multifamily communities. Lot sizes tend to be larger, often half an acre or more, providing privacy and room for landscaping. The median sale price is in the upper $600,000s, generally more than neighboring communities like Brookfield, Wauwatosa, New Berlin and West Allis. The market stays consistently in demand, and inventory tends to move quickly.

Roads, transit options and typical drive times

West Bluemound Road runs through the village, connecting to local businesses and surrounding areas. Interstate 94 is just south of the area, providing a 10-mile route into Milwaukee. Even with traffic, this drive typically takes between 15 and 25 minutes. Waukesha Metro Transit offers bus service within the area, and riders can transfer to the Milwaukee County Transit System.

Seasonal beer garden, shopping and local dining spots

During warmer months, a seasonal beer garden in Elm Grove Park draws crowds. “Our beer garden is presented by Third Space Brewing,” says Village Recreation Manager Logan Kein. “When it's open, it's packed. It's right next to our volleyball court and playground, so parents and children will come and have a great time.” Several locally owned restaurants are open year-round:

  • Zisters, a brunch and lunch spot with creative fare like chicken and waffle sliders
  • O'Donoghue's Irish Pub, which features live music and a Friday fish fry
  • Za, an Italian restaurant with wood-fired pizzas and handmade pastas
  • Nona, a health-focused cafe with specialty coffee, smoothies and açaí bowls
Locals usually head over to Brookfield for shopping, hitting spots like Brookfield Square and Sendik’s. For a wider selection, many also make the short drive to Mayfair in Wauwatosa.

How the village’s largest park combines nature and recreation

Right next to Village Hall, Elm Grove Village Park is the community's primary green space. “A lot of people call it a diamond in the rough,” Kein says. “With all the noise of the Milwaukee suburbs, it's the place people go for peace and quiet, besides the local train that passes through.” Spanning nearly 80 acres, the park features a paved path of almost 2 miles looping around a pond. The area is a designated eBird Hotspot where observers have identified dozens of bird species. Courts are available for tennis, basketball and sand volleyball. There are also baseball diamonds, a heated swimming pool, a splash pad and a sledding hill.

What annual festivals and events bring residents together

Elm Grove has a full calendar, with a mix of low-key traditions and seasonal gatherings that bring people out. Here are some of the ones you’ll hear about most:

  • Memorial Day Parade, a traditional parade with floats and marching bands honoring service members
  • Tunes on Tuesday, a free evening concert series at Elm Grove Village Park on select summer Tuesdays
  • Elm Grove Wine and Art Walk, a June event where attendees visit local businesses to sample wine and view art
  • Elm Grove Oktoberfest, a weekend festival in September with German music, food trucks and a beer tent
