A clean and safe Bank Street
Bank Street’s motto is “A Clean Neighborhood is a Safe Neighborhood," and its residents are working on making that a reality. The Bank Street Neighborhood Association is committed to bettering their community with projects like The Cathy Assad Community Garden on North Seventh Street. In 2016, the neighborhood association turned a vacant piece of land into a garden that benefits several neighborhoods in the area. In addition to its green spaces, Bank Street is full of the town’s history, like the historic Oak Grove Cemetery. “It’s a really pretty place to enjoy the scenery; it’s very quiet and surrounded by residential properties,” says Caroline H. Aubin, the registrar and assistant site manager of the Fall River Historical Society. The neighborhood is also within walking distance of many restaurants and shops downtown.

Visiting Oak Grove Cemetery
Resting at the heart of the community and established in 1855, Oak Grove Cemetery spans over 80 acres and is a historic site with elements of Gothic Revival architecture. Locals may find its garden-style grounds a serene spot for taking a stroll. “It began with this idea of a bucolic, park-like cemetery where people could go and spend time with loved ones,” Aubin says. “Back then, they didn’t really have parks like we do nowadays, so this was the way to have green space while still being a cemetery.” The cemetery draws crowds for its famous inhabitant: Lizzie Borden. Borden’s gravesite attracts tourists from around the country. In 1892, Borden was accused of fatally attacking her father and stepmother. While she was acquitted of the crime, it remains one of the most intriguing unsolved mysteries in American pop culture. Just miles away, Borden’s former residence has been turned into a bed and breakfast.

The transformation of Thomas J. Giunta Tot Lot
Thomas J. Giunta Tot Lot is another example of the work that the Bank Street Neighborhood Association is doing for community improvement and beautification.
