Homes from the 1900s and more modern options
Homes come in various architectural styles, from stately Federal and Greek Revival to more modest ranch-styles and raised ranch-styles. Single-family homes tend to be older, many dating back to 1900. They range in price from $260,000 to $550,000. Multi-family homes start as low as $349,000 for three bedrooms and go as high as over $2 million for 22 bedrooms. Condos are priced between $185,000 and $275,000. Some properties sit very close together, while others have a bit more yard space. Homes near the Fall River Expressway have a barrier of leafy trees between them and the highway. The transformation of Thomas J. Giunta Tot Lot
Thomas J. Giunta Tot Lot is another example of the work that the Bank Street Neighborhood Association is doing for community improvement and beautification. Working with the former mayor, they turned the blighted Bank Street Tot Lot into a revitalized gated green space named after Giunta, a police officer killed in the line of duty. Ruggles Park sits west of the neighborhood and is on the National Register of Historic Places. Its nine acres contain a playground and softball field. A few blocks east, residents can take their pets to the Jose Silva Dog Park. Vitality Obstacle Fitness is an indoor recreation option that offers classes for all ages in the style of the television series American Ninja Warrior.B.M.C Durfee High's college style courses
Most addresses in the neighborhood are zoned for Spencer Borden Elementary, which has a B grade on Niche. Morton Middle receives a C score, while B.M.C Durfee High earns a B. The high school has nearly 2,500 students and offers classes geared to emulate college courses, like Thrillers & Chillers: Slasher Girls and Monster Boys and The Art of Storytelling: Hip Hop/ R&B. Adulting 101: A Primer for Life after HS teaches students life skills like how to have healthy relationships, money management and job interviewing.Visiting Oak Grove Cemetery
Resting at the heart of the community and established in 1855, Oak Grove Cemetery spans over 80 acres and is a historic site with elements of Gothic Revival architecture. Locals may find its garden-style grounds a serene spot for taking a stroll. “It began with this idea of a bucolic, park-like cemetery where people could go and spend time with loved ones,” Aubin says. “Back then, they didn’t really have parks like we do nowadays, so this was the way to have green space while still being a cemetery.” The cemetery draws crowds for its famous inhabitant: Lizzie Borden. Borden’s gravesite attracts tourists from around the country. In 1892, Borden was accused of fatally attacking her father and stepmother. While she was acquitted of the crime, it remains one of the most intriguing unsolved mysteries in American pop culture. Just miles away, Borden’s former residence has been turned into a bed and breakfast.Driving on the Fall River Expressway
The drive to Providence is about 18 miles away, while a trip to Downtown Boston will take around 50 miles. Grand Army of the Republic Highway and Massachusetts Route 24, also known as Fall River Expressway, run through the neighborhood and feed into Interstate 195. The Charlton Memorial Hospital is in the neighborhood, so residents living nearby may hear ambulances driving by frequently. Driving to the Rhode Island T.F. Green International Airport will take around 25 miles.Shopping on New Boston Road
While Bank Street is more residential, there are a handful of restaurants and shops, which may be walkable for some residents. Along New Boston Road is New Boston Bakery serving soup, salad and sandwiches. There are a few fast-food chains like Wendy’s, as well as long-standing local restaurants like Graham’s Hot Dog’s. Portugalia Marketplace is a specialty grocery store specializing in Portuguese specialties. Stop & Shop grocery store is less than a mile away.
