Berkley Bridge/Lower Berkley
Suburban Neighborhood in Fall River, Massachusetts
Bristol County 02702, 02779
New England styles on larger bucolic lots
Modest New England-style homes sit along the town’s thoroughfares, which branch into meandering country roads. Cape Cods and ranch-style homes make up the smaller housing stock, while colonial-styles are common among larger homes. Subdivisions on the neighborhood’s outskirts can have a sparse suburban feel, but neighbors still have plenty of room and privacy from each other — property sizes average about 1 acre. Prices for real estate typically range between $410,000 and $800,000, and land is also available for purchase.Outdoor recreation along the Taunton River
Covered by the Berkley Bridge’s shadow, kayakers and boaters can launch their vessels into the Taunton River at the Berkley Bridge Village Heritage Park. The small park is popular among recreationists for its picnic areas, riverside benches and fishing spots. Dighton Rock State Park stretches over 85 acres south of Berkley, its forested landscape opening to snaking biking and hiking trails. Anglers and boaters may also take advantage of the Taunton River from the state park, which also features a museum that showcases the river and the area’s rich history.Berkley Public Schools and shared high school with Somerset
Students in Lower Berkley/Berkley Bridge may start their education in the Berkley Public Schools district, which earns a C from Niche and contains two schools. Berkley Community School serves prekindergarten through fourth grade and receives a C-plus grade, while Berkley Middle School serves kids in fifth through eighth grades and gets a B-minus. Malloch says that the centrally located schools allow for a more tight-knit community feel. “But the high school is shared with Somerset,” he adds. With a B score from Niche, Somerset Berkley Regional High School serves just over 1,000 students and gets high ratings for its teachers, extracurricular activities and programs.Seasonal events enliven the community at Berkley Common
Though the town is small, Berkley’s community comes alive throughout the year for events on the Berkley Common. “In the summertime, once or twice a month, something is going on in the Berkley Common,” Malloch says. “Either a craft fair, farmers market or outdoor entertainment, where townspeople will come sit in lawn chairs or dance in the street. It’s always a nice community activity.” The Berkley Public Library also hosts a mix of workshops, book clubs and other events for all ages, including story time for kids, teen volunteering opportunities, craft and crochet nights, and more.Nearby thoroughfares and the new Freetown Train Station
While Lower Berkley/Berkley Bridge is closest to Route 24, the neighborhood also offers proximity to Route 44 with connections to Interstate 495 and Route 140, which link to Interstate 195. The Freetown Train Station recently opened, connecting commuters to Boston for about $12 round-trip.Taunton shopping and dining 5 miles away
The Boondocks has become a neighborhood staple as Berkley's singular restaurant in the town center. The diner serves an array of American comfort foods and is especially popular for its breakfast menu, which features items such as French toast and Belgian waffles. “We did just get a Dunkin’, which was a big deal,” Malloch says, emphasizing that residents head out of town for more comprehensive shopping and dining options. A trip of less than 5 miles north via Route 24 brings locals to the Taunton Depot, a convenient shopping plaza with Kohl’s, T.J. Maxx and Target. The center also features casual fast-food chains and other eateries like Smokey Bones Taunton, a smokehouse dishing up barbecue. While Target can fulfill the need for groceries and household necessities, other nearby options include Hannaford and Trucchi’s Supermarket.
