South High
Neighborhood in Fargo, North Dakota
Cass County 58103
Built across decades, a mixture of housing options
The mixture and age of homes in South High reflects the community’s status as one of the core Fargo neighborhoods. Post-war ramblers, some of which feature additions, sit across the street from bi-levels constructed in the 1970s and 1980s. Mature trees tower over the rooftops, providing shade for the streets and fenced-in backyards. While all the homes have garages, many of the older ones are detached one- and two-stall units with electrical hook-ups. “It’s pretty standard that you plug in your car here in the winter, all the time,” says Jenny Buhr, Realtor with Trilogy Real Estate and President of Doorsteps Midwest. Newer homes generally have attached and insulated garages, so the plug-in isn’t always necessary. These garages are sometimes oversized for storing tools and recreational vehicles. Townhouses and condos add to the mix of housing options in South High, offering an entry point with units selling for between $110,000 and $190,000. Twin homes generally cost $200,000 to $275,000, while single-family homes get between $200,000 and $400,000.Car-dependent but ready for recreational walking and biking
South High has a thorough mix of transportation options, with quiet side streets and well-maintained sidewalks under shade trees, making biking and walking popular in the warmer months. MATBUS routes 14, 15 and 18 surround the neighborhood with multiple stops. Still, most residents rely on a car, particularly in winter. Downtown Fargo is roughly 2 miles away and can be reached within 10 minutes; Hector International Airport, roughly 6 miles north, is usually a 10-minute drive as well. Interstate 94 runs along the bottom of the neighborhood, east to Moorhead or west to Interstate 29 and the employment and entertainment options in the growing southwest region of the metro. This includes Essentia Health, 3 miles away, and Sanford Medical Center, 4 miles away. Both provide 24-hour emergency care and are two of the largest employers in the metro – they’re also both a drive of 10 minutes or less most times of day. Some houses of worship are nearby, including Tri-City Haitian Ministry Worship Center, which is located within the community.A full pipeline of schools within walking distance
Some students in the neighborhood will never have to ride a bus to school and will only need a ride on the coldest days, as the full pipeline of public schools is within a mile of many residences. Kids will start out at Lewis & Clark Elementary, which earns a C-plus from Niche, before heading to Carl Ben Eielson Middle School, graded with a B-minus. The neighborhood gets its name from South High School, which is in the middle of the community. Mary Schimke, Realtor with Archer Real Estate Services, has had three of her children go through South High and says, “There’s a lot of great things about this school system, I can’t say enough about it.” With an overall B grade, South also earns an A-minus for diversity. Nativity Elementary School is just east of the neighborhood. It is the closest primary school in the St John Paul II Catholic School system, and from there, students can head to Sacred Heart Middle and Shanley High School to finish their Catholic education. Oak Grove Lutheran Elementary is another option, with the Oak Grove Lutheran North Campus being home to sixth through twelfth grades.Culturally focused dining and local businesses come together
Danni Melquist, Director of Marketing for Visit Fargo-Moorhead, says that Fargo has an incredible cultural cuisine scene, and South High is a great example. Clustered in the northwestern corner, residents can choose from SOHO 23 for Korean and Japanese cuisine, including kalbi and dolsot bibimbap; Leela Thai cuisine for curries and classics like pad gra prow; or Rugsan East African cuisine with flavors from Somalia and Ethiopia. Numerous small local retailers in the 25th Street Market include Flatland Guitar and Lutherie, The Bountiful Ewe yarn shop and Golden Dragon Tattoo. A few blocks east, Hornbacher’s is a convenient grocery stop; SCHEELS Home and Hardware is west along 13th Avenue for home needs. Further west, West Acres Mall is the largest shopping mall in the state, home to over 100 retailers and services.Family-friendly festivities all year round
Aside from games and events at South High, most residents make short trips to Downtown Fargo for events ranging from the Red River Market every Saturday from July through October to annual celebrations like the Downtown Fargo Street Fair and Christkindlmarkt at the Civic Center. Many events focus on getting entire families involved - “They try to make everything family-friendly – like Frostival, they typically have kids games there,” says Buhr, referring to the winter event that breaks up the cold months with ten days of everything from snow volleyball, to sledding and ice fishing.School-adjacent parks
Public parks surround the high school and nearby Lewis & Clark Elementary. Buhr says some residents don’t realize these attached parks and pools aren’t just for school usage. The pool includes a towering water slide–although Buhr mentions that the slide in Davies is even taller and faster. Five tennis courts are open for play in the warm weather months, along with basketball and racquetball courts. Lewis & Clark's green space offers a basketball court, a playground and a rink that is used for ice skating in the winter. Westgate Park to the west is home to a multi-purpose field, a playground and an ice rink complete with skating lights and warming houses for all those who want to get in some free skating and pick-up hockey. Just south of the park, Prairiewood Golf Course is a 9-hole public course designed for intermediate golfers. Tharaldson Little League Complex has four little league fields and The ATTIC indoor facility has batting cages and hitting equipment for year-round training. With convenience comes noise
While many residents enjoy having the conveniences of schools and major roadways nearby, these amenities do come with some inconveniences. Properties near I-94 experience regularly elevated noise levels, while at the same time, home football games at South High and late-night games and tournaments at the Tharaldson Little League Complex, can also bring traffic into the neighborhood, with noise and lights late into the evenings.
