South High offers suburban living central to Fargo.
South High is a convenient, modestly priced suburb
South High is a centrally located Fargo neighborhood with price points that appeal to first-time homebuyers. Spacious yards, the local high school and neighborhood parks are among its family-friendly perks. The area is pretty walkable, and residents can drive to major employers such as Microsoft and Sanford Medical Center in the same amount of time it takes to travel into Downtown Fargo.
Tall trees add to the community's established feel.
Housing options and accessible price points
Most people own their homes, which adds to the neighborhood's established feel. Bi-levels and ranch-style houses are common here, often coming with finished basements and garages that easily fit multiple cars. Backyards are large enough for a game of catch, a playset or trampoline, and many are fenced. You'll find some low-rise condos along the edges of the neighborhood. Some come with monthly HOA fees in the $100 to $200 range, while others don't have any.
Single-family homes generally range from the high $280,000s to the low $400,000s, depending on size. Condos usually fall in the low to mid-$100,000s. "The price range is attractive to first-time buyers," says Arlin Fisher, a Realtor with Park Co. Realtors and nine years of industry experience.
The area takes its name from South High School.
Public school options and a local high school
Students are served by Fargo Public Schools, which offers an in-district petition process allowing parents to send their children to a preferred school when space is available. The neighborhood takes its name from South High School, which sits at the center of the community.
The neighborhood's established suburban vibe
South High has a distinctly suburban, family-friendly character. Tree-lined streets, well-kept yards, and established homes create a neighborhood that feels steady and comfortable. "Overall, the design of the neighborhood creates emphasis on accessibility and a relaxed pace of life," Fisher says. "The area connects easily and quickly to major access roads, yet it's in a low-traffic area. It has sidewalks throughout, so that makes it very walkable." Fisher notes that the way of life encourages people to stay long-term, and he's worked with residents who have lived here for more than 60 years.
Car-dependent but ready for recreational walking and biking
You can easily walk to commercial areas along 25th Street and 13th Avenue, as well as to parks and schools from South High. Still, compared to neighborhoods like Clara Barton and Hawthorne — both closer to downtown — South High's walkability is more moderate. Hawthorne, in particular, sits right next to the downtown area, which naturally makes it even more pedestrian-friendly. For broader travel, Interstate 94 runs along the bottom of the neighborhood, and Interstate 29 is nearby. Some key destinations you can drive to in 10 to 15 minutes:
Downtown Fargo for its strong local shopping and dining scene and mix of entertainment, including comedy shows at The Cellar
Major regional employers such as Microsoft, Sanford Medical Center and Essentia Health
Hector International Airport for domestic flights
You can also catch the bus from South High. MATBUS runs fixed routes from here, including to the downtown area, with stops on 25th Street and 13th Avenue.

Shopping options and parks nearby
You'll find a mix of commercial options at the top end of the neighborhood, where 25th Street and 13th Avenue meet. The 25th Street Market shopping strip anchors the area, with places like Leela Thai Cuisine, Caribou Coffee, a guitar shop and a gift store. For groceries, you have Cash Wise Foods in one direction and Hornbacher's in the other — both within just a couple of miles of the community's core.
Most major shopping happens at West Acres mall. "It's a very quick drive over. The mall is one of those areas where there's a lot more actual shopping. We're still one of those weird cities where malls actually are a thing," says Realtor Erik Wall, who has been in the industry for over 20 years and is the team owner at Wall Street Realty Team.
For recreation, you have options in the neighborhood, some located at the school, yet open to the public:
Enjoy the South High Sports Arena, which features a running track, weight room, and figure skating rink
Swim and play at the Southwest Recreational Pool, complete with a large waterslide and mushroom fountains for all ages
Catch a game or join the action at the Tharaldson Little League Complex, home to Fargo Youth Baseball games
