Moving, not leaving
“Most people that grew up in North Fargo love-love-love North Fargo, they’ll continue to look for space in North Fargo, because it has big mature trees,” says Donna Heck, Concierge Strategist for the Fargo-Moorhead-West Fargo Chamber of Commerce. Rental apartments, condos, and manufactured home communities are clustered at the neighborhood's southern end. Above 36th Avenue, townhouses and twins take over, giving way to single-family bi-levels and split-levels with contemporary traditional design cues at the north end of the community. These single-family properties sit on a quarter to a third of an acre and feature two- and three-car attached garages, with maples and elms often shading the fenced-in backyards. Condos and townhouses sell for between $80,000 and $200,000, while twin homes generally go for between $175,000 to $275,000. Single-family properties sell for $200,000 to $500,000, with the newest builds from 2018 and on getting a premium. Properties here generally sell 10 to 12 days faster than the national average, and oftentimes residents move out of their rental apartments—which make up roughly half the housing in the neighborhood—to a condo, townhouse or single-family home within their same community.Unidentified flying objects in the woods
Some beings do lurk in the woods at all hours here – disc golfers! Golfers can be found throwing a round at Trollwood Disc Golf Course from early morning into the deep evenings. Known as a destination course for Dakotans, Trollwood is considered one of the top five courses in the state. The 18-hole course is moderately difficult, sitting under mature oak and willow trees with the Red River on the horizon. Trollwood Park features two playgrounds and event facilities—and bikers and runners utilize the park's paved trail which follows the natural curves of the river. It's not unusual to also spot fishermen along the banks of the Red River, a popular spot for anglers. Nearby, North Broadway Park also features green spaces, a playground and a basketball court.Students head to some of the top schools in the state
Most students in Trollwood start at McKinley Elementary School, located just south of the neighborhood, and graded with a B-minus by Niche. However, those in the far northern reaches will need to head to Washington Elementary School, while those on the eastern blocks will go to Longfellow Elementary School – these are graded with a B and an A-minus, respectively. Regardless of the elementary school they attend, students in the neighborhood who stay in the public school pipeline will head to Ben Franklin Middle School, which receives a B-plus, before heading to Fargo North High School, which earns an A-minus. North is the top-rated school in the Fargo Public Schools system and is rated the second-best public high school in North Dakota by Niche, which also names it the top STEM school in the state. In the skies above
“The Fargo AirSho is kid-friendly. It happens every other year or so. The cool thing about living in North Fargo is you can sit on your rooftop and watch it,” says Buhr. “Watching the Blue Angels fly from your house is a unique experience—they often go to The Shack when they’re here!” It can bring a bit of noise to the neighborhood, above and beyond the regular air traffic noise, but it’s a free show and worth it for many residents. For the rest of the year, they’ll head into town for major events, from the Red River Valley Fair in West Fargo to RedHawks games and FargoDome events like Happy Harry’s RibFest.Car-dependent living in Fargo’s far north
“The north side is much quieter from a traffic perspective,” says Heck. While traffic is limited throughout Trollwood, it’s a car-dependent neighborhood, with only a handful of MATBUS Route 13 stops. Walking or biking is impractical and limited to recreation. This means that residents almost exclusively drive around town, including to downtown Fargo 5 miles south. Hector International Airport is right next to the nieghborhood, and residents can be at the terminals within five minutes – this does come with the accompanying air traffic noise, which may increase as the airport is being expanded to add more parking and gates to account for increased passenger and freight traffic. Heck notes that emergency care is limited – while there is a Sanford satellite clinic located a mile south and a daytime urgent care roughly 3 miles south, the nearest 24-hour emergency care is at Sanford Medical Center, a drive of 11 miles. However, with Fargo’s traffic, this is still a drive of 15 minutes or less.Legendary desserts at one of Fargo’s favorite restaurants
Trollwood, and North Fargo in general, are very much residential areas. There’s only one spot to grab a bite within the neighborhood, but it’s known across the city. “The Shack on Broadway in North Fargo is huge, they’ve been here for a long time, they're a staple in North Fargo, and they’ve been voted as one of the best places to eat in Fargo almost every year,” says Buhr. Known for its hearty American diner classics, The Shack serves all-day breakfasts with entrees like monster-sized pancakes and country-fried steak, but the meal doesn't end there. Residents know they've got to order one of the diner's famous caramel rolls. A classic regional dessert – sometimes even called a “Dakota Roll” – these caramel-soaked pastries have a cult-like following, and Buhr says The Shack’s are considered the best in Fargo. “When you talk about shopping and boutiques, we really don’t have that on the north side; you need to go to south Fargo, downtown, or out to West Acres Shopping Center,” says Heck. Northport Shopping Center is a mile south and has a Hornbacher’s and a Burggraf’s Ace Hardware for groceries and home necessities, respectively.Something lurks in the Trollwood
While there may not be any trolls in Trollwood, there is something big, ugly and scary there – the Fargo Regional Water Reclamation Facility. While critical to the city’s clean water needs, the plant can sometimes produce aromas and does bring some light industrial traffic to the otherwise quiet neighborhood.
