The first settlers in the village of Fayetteville planted roots in the late 1700s and later named the area to honor one of the heroes of the American Revolution, Marquis de Lafayette. An area rooted in trade and waterpower due to its location along Limestone Creek, Fayetteville grew to become a hub for commuters. “It’s an extremely convenient area and is a prime spot for people who don’t want to be too far from the action,” says Nancy Quigg, associate broker with MyTownRealty, who has 15 years of experience selling in the area. “You can quickly get to shopping centers from the homes here, and all you have to do is hop on Interstate 690 to get to Syracuse in less than 20 minutes.”
Everything from historic homes to ranch-style and new builds
Most of Fayetteville’s residential pockets are tucked away from the busiest main roads and the streetscapes vary as much as the architecture in the area. In some parts of the village, historic and midcentury homes on well-maintained quarter-to-half-acre lawns are surrounded by dense thickets of mature trees, while new construction neatly lines streets flanked by sidewalks. Regardless of the type of home, the majority feature some off-street parking, whether a small driveway or a two-car garage. A renovated farmhouse, colonial or Victorian home built in the 1800s is typically priced around $290,000. Buyers with a budget of $390,000 to $425,000 will find ranch homes, split-levels and new construction on the market. While they tend to be outliers, there are custom builds and Millennium mansions on 5-acre lots in Fayetteville priced above $1 million.

Retail and restaurant scene clustered along Highway 5
The village’s shopping and dining scene is clustered along Highway 5. The Towne Center at Fayetteville can serve as a one-stop shop, housing several banks, salons, a YMCA, grocery stores like Target and TOPS and national retailers including Kohl’s, TJ Maxx and Ann Taylor. Chain eateries like Bonefish Grill and Carrabba’s are dotted around the shopping complex. Limestone Plaza showcases the area’s history through a string of local shops and restaurants, where residents frequently mingle over a coal-fired pizza at Avicolli’s or sipping on margaritas and mules at Bull and Bear Roadhouse.

Ample clubs and activities at highly rated Fayetteville-Manlius schools
Highly rated schools are another perk for newcomers to Fayetteville, according to Quigg. Students are part of the Fayetteville-Manlius Central School District and will attend either Fayetteville Elementary School or Mott Road Elementary School, each earning an A rating from Niche. They’ll later filter into A-rated Wellwood Middle School, which underwent a massive renovation in 2017 with a new cafeteria, music and art rooms and additional classrooms. “The two elementary schools and the middle school also sit in a concentrated area, which makes it easy for parents to commute between them,” says Quigg. At Fayetteville-Manlius High School, which Niche rates an A, students will have more than 50 clubs and activities to choose from. The Model UN club hosts a yearly conference, often inviting more than 1,000 delegates from around New York. The school also has an award-winning arts program with a symphony orchestra, concert band and ukulele ensemble.
The Wellwood Middle School serves grades 5-8.
Just over 420 students attend the Mott Road Elementary School.

Waterfront parks and recreation scene
Green Lakes State Park is planted at Fayetteville’s eastern edge and spans nearly 2,000 acres. Much of the activity centers around the park’s two glacial lakes, Green Lake and Round Lake, where people can go fishing or kayaking. During the summer months, locals lay out on the sandy beach of Green Lake before jumping in for a swim. Visitors who stop by during the frigid, snowy winter can snowshoe or go cross-country skiing along the 15 miles of trails winding through the park. There are also two courses for golf and disc golf, grounds for hunting and several playgrounds. Several community pocket parks are dotted throughout the village, including Canal Landing Park. It’s one of the newest in the area, situated alongside Limestone Creek. It took more than 30 years to finish the final product in 2011, complete with a playground, outdoor fitness stations and trails. The shaded pathways lead to a pedestrian bridge that crosses Limestone Creek and links to the Erie Canalway Trail, the most expansive trail system in the state, stretching 360 miles from Buffalo to Albany.

Less than 8 miles to Syracuse University and other major employers
The Centro transit system runs buses throughout Fayetteville, with stops along East Genesee and South Manlius streets, which can connect locals to neighboring areas, including Dewitt, Manlius and Syracuse. Fayetteville is primarily car-dependent, with residents relying on Route 5 and Interstates 481 and 690 to navigate the area. Just off Highway 5 on North Burdick Street, locals will find a hub for medical centers and doctors' offices. Still, they can also make the 7.5-mile trip west along I-690 to SUNY Upstate Medical University or Crouse Hospital in Syracuse. The city is packed with museums, restaurants and shops all centered around Syracuse University. Travelers going on a trip outside the city can catch a flight at Syracuse Hancock International Airport, which is less than 16 miles northeast of Fayetteville.
