Some homes in South Parks date to the early 1900s; newer ones are from the 1980s. Bungalows, ranch-style homes, split levels and Cape Cods are some options. Remodels are common, and some homes have finished basements. Prices range from about $15,000 for a fixer-upper to $150,000 for a newly renovated home. Many single-family homes in the community are rental properties, and there are several apartment complexes.
Brennan Park has open space and a playground and is known for the annual Southside Reunion. The community cookout, held on the third Saturday of August, has music, vendors and kids' activities. The Brennan Senior Center provides various resources and activities, including exercise classes, for residents over 55. Some people go fishing at Thread Lake Park, on the north side of the lake. On the other side are Cummings Park and McKinley Park, which are connected. The Flint Golf Club, a private course that's been around for over a century, is on the southeast side of the lake.
It's a couple of miles to the College Cultural neighborhood, which is north of I-69. College Cultural is home to the Flint Cultural Center, a concentrated area of arts, entertainment and educational facilities like the Flint Institute of Arts, the Sloan Museum of Discovery, the Longway Planetarium, the Flint Institute of Music and performance venue Whiting Auditorium. Among the numerous activities and events are live astronomy and glassblowing presentations, symphony shows, hobby workshops and a book club.
Kids in kindergarten through sixth grade may attend Freeman Elementary School, which earns a D-plus from Niche. For seventh grade through to graduation, there's Flint Southwestern Classical Academy, rated C, and an authorized International Baccalaureate World School. Flint Community Schools district's Schools of Choice program allows enrollment by application to schools outside regular neighborhood zoning. STEM academies at elementary and middle school levels are two of the district's specialty schools. The International Academy of Flint, a nearby charter school, covers all grade levels and receives a 3 out of 10 rating from GreatSchools.
Around Lapeer Road are some industrial companies and the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan, which distributes nearly 40 million pounds of food across 22 counties. Volunteer opportunities are available Monday through Saturday; the food bank gets about 7,000 volunteers every year.
Some businesses are to the east, along Lapeer Road and state Route 54, also known as Dort Highway. In addition to several fast-food options, there's locally owned Mimi's Cuban Bakery and Cafe, which has everything from cakes to empanadas to Caldosa stew. Jacob Habibi Burger food truck is often parked in the area, offering halal smash burgers and chicken wings. Grocery stores within a few miles include an Aldi and a Meijer. Downtown, the Flint Farmers' Market runs Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays all year and hosts special events like the Flint Handmade Spring Craft Market in April, Pavilion Opening Day in May and the Christmas in July Night Market.
Flint's Mass Transit Authority (MTA) buses run in the neighborhood. The Lapeer Road route stops include the food bank, the Brennan Senior Center, and the Flint Station to connect to MTA and Indian Trails buses or Amtrak. Commutes from South Parks to job sites General Motors Flint Assembly plant and McLaren Flint hospital are about 5 miles. It's about 6 miles to Bishop International Airport, which offers flights on a few major carriers and is another big employer. Plane-related noise, including sonic booms from National Guard aircraft exercises, is sometimes a concern.
South Parks residents living closest to the interstates may also experience noise issues. Another concern is water quality. The extent of the lead contamination of the city's water became known in 2014. The Environmental Protection Agency had deemed the water safe as of 2018, but it's still advised to use a filter for all tap water for drinking.
