Parkwood
Older ranch-style and split-level homes
Brick ranch-style and Craftsman homes line Parkwood's narrow streets. Modest bushes and oak trees ranging from eye-level to a few dozen feet tall dot the area, often splitting the difference between homes and the roads since there are no sidewalks. Street parking is rarely, if ever, utilized as driveways are commonplace, with some garages. Short chain link fences separate some backyards while others run up to the surrounding woods along Middle Swamp. Homes offer up to 2,400 square feet of living space, usually with three bedrooms and two bathrooms. Prices typically fall between $200,000 and $300,000, lower than nearby neighborhoods like Olde Mill. "Parkwood homes are a little bit older and a little bit more affordable," Stroud says. "Our property taxes are phenomenally cheap compared to lots of other areas in the state."Reducing mobile learning units for Florence Schools
Parkwood students are part of the Florence 1 School District and start at Greenwood Elementary School, a B-minus-graded school according to Niche. Greenwood Elementary has around 500 students and a student-teacher ratio of 14-to-1. Southside Middle School receives a B from Niche. Southside is an AdvancED STEM Certified school offering courses in robotics, modeling and fundamentals of computing and design. South Florence High School earns a B-plus from Niche and is known for its fine arts programs. South Florence offers an integrated magnet program called The Florence One Center for the Arts (FICA). The program provides opportunities for students to participate and excel in visual arts, music, film and other arts. All the Florence schools have undergone expansions and facility renovations the last few years to accommodate more students and get them back in classrooms. "One of the goals was to get students out of mobile learning units," says Stephanie Grosick, the Vice President of Business Development for Florence County Economic Development Partnership. "At one point, there were 124 mobile units in the district; now it is at 20 with a plan to get rid of all of them."
Explore the outdoors at Jeffries Creek Park
Sports and outdoor recreation opportunities are a prominent part of living in Florence. No recreation space in Florence matches the popularity of the Rail Trail. What was once a railroad track is now a 5-mile long, paved walking path encapsulated by forests to one side and houses along the other with a canopy of trees overhead. "There are several entrances to the Rail Trail throughout Florence," Grosick says. "One of them is a bit of a hub with a brewery, an outdoor shop, food trucks and an ice cream shop."Sitting between Parkwood and the Rail Trail, Jeffries Creek Park is a 55-acre wooded wetland along the creek with walking trails, a playground and picnic tables. Locals love to explore the natural trails and outdoors in the park, sometimes spotting wildlife like snakes, squirrels and birds. Nearby Freedom Park is a sports complex with five baseball fields surrounding the main center building. Surrounding the fields, visitors can walk on the dirt paths beneath the overhanging trees alongside Jeffries Creek. South Florence's growth brings in many new businesses and industries, but the outdoor spaces remain a mainstay for the community. "We are really trying to pull in more of the outdoor spaces, but the development team has done a great job not overbuilding everything into a concrete jungle," Stroud says.
Karaoke and Mexican food favorites at Zapatas
The nearby Pamplico Highway is lined with businesses and restaurants, and it leads across Freedom Boulevard to the South Park Shopping Center and multiple employers in the fast-growing South Florence area. Along this commercial stretch is Zapatas Mexican Grill, which serves Mexican fare, like fajitas, and receives high marks for its atmosphere and service. "Zapatas is a great Mexican restaurant and is known for their karaoke," Grosick says. Lulu's Coffee Shop offers favorite morning drinks, like chai, various coffee blends, muffins and other café food staples. The laid-back atmosphere makes it a popular place to hang out on a work break or to start the day. Stefano's Italian of Florence is a favorite place by many locals for its pizzas and Italian staples. The commercial area of South Florence includes grocery stores like ALDI and Food Lion, along with Walmart and other big-box retailers.4-mile drive to downtown
Parkwood residents need a vehicle to get around Florence because the community is spread out. Getting to Downtown Florence means driving about 4 miles north along Irby Street, with the Florence Regional Airport 5 miles away in the same direction. Florence has two major hospitals, McLeod Regional Medical Center and Florence Regency Hospital. McLeod requires driving into downtown, while Regency sits about a mile away.Annual events in Downtown Florence
Florence hosts various events and festivities year-round, some celebrating holidays and others celebrating the community. Downtown annually starts the Halloween season on the second Friday of October with Fright Fest. The event features spooky music, costumes, food vendors, and a Trunk or Treat event. The mainstay annual event for Florence remains the SC Pecan Music and Food Festival, a 20-year tradition in downtown drawing over 50,000 attendees. The festival includes hundreds of vendors, live music and featured attractions like a car show and Pecan Pub Experience. In addition to these larger events, the community hosts smaller gatherings like Small Business Saturday and Downtown Restaurant Week. "There is always something going on downtown, it brings a lot of the local community in," says Heather Keffer, the marketing and communications manager with Visit Florence.
