Park Hill
Green gardens and shaded streets
Towering oak trees shade the roads of Park Hill, where residents can be seen taking a stroll. “It’s pretty walkable,” says Morter, who often walks her dog through the neighborhood. “There’s no sidewalks, but because of the flow of traffic, it’s safe.” Many of the grassy lawns are decorated with lawn ornaments and blooming gardens – some are even growing vegetables. Most houses were built between the 1920s and 1950s, although some were built after 1970. Craftsman and Tudor-inspired houses sit alongside minimal traditional cottages. There are some Victorian-era properties in the northern parts of the neighborhood. Most prices for a three- to four-bedroom range from $125,000 to $275,000. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) says the area has a relatively moderate risk of tornadoes. Standard homeowner’s insurance typically covers wind and storm damage.Park Hill attends Fort Smith public schools
Park Hill is part of the Fort Smith School District. Niche gives Ballman Elementary School a B, while Ramsey Junior High School receives a B-plus. Southside High School earns an A. Like the rest of Arkansas’s high schools, Southside recently added a new graduation requirement: students must complete 75 hours of community service before graduation. At the University of Arkansas—Fort Smith, high schoolers can enroll in general or career and technical education courses for college credit.Car dependent community
Residents of Park Hill and most of Fort Smith rely on cars to get around. “We are a car community,” says Josh Buchfink, public relations manager for the city. State Route 22, also known as Rogers Avenue, is less than 1 mile away and connects with Interstate 540. Even with most people driving themselves, some public transportation is available. Buses run along Jenny Lind Road. Baptist Health – Fort Smith is about 1 mile away. Fort Smith Regional Airport is about 5 miles away. It is a small airport with two gates that fly into Dallas. “You walk in, and security takes two whole minutes,” Morter says. “It is so convenient.” The Ebbing Air National Guard Base is next to the airport and is the new location for F-35 training for the U.S. and allied nations. “Singapore will have a permanent mission here,” Buchfink says. While the increased flights will inevitably lead to more noise, he attests that it will also boost the city’s economy.Retail and restaurants near Park Hill
While Park Hill is primarily residential, plenty of restaurants and shops are nearby. The Yellow Umbrella is a casual restaurant along Greenwood Avenue open for lunch during the week. “You can just go sit at the picnic table, grab a shake and burger and just chill,” Morter says. Folks can buy a new outfit at Clothologie and cross the street to look at the antiques at DejaVu & New, a vintage store. There are more options about 2 miles away, in Downtown Fort Smith. 21 West End is a fine-dining restaurant located in a building that was previously a jailhouse and a speakeasy. “If walls could talk, these walls would have a lot to say,” says server Chase Campbell. Rolando’s Restaurante features a Nuevo Latin menu that puts modern twists on classic Latin American dishes such as tamales. At Bookish: An Independent Book Store, readers can ask employees for a recommendation or join one of the monthly book clubs. There are several bars and lounges where locals can get a drink. 906 Lounge is a popular cigar bar. “They have an incredible filtration system,” says Realtor and Auctioneer Zack Looper, who grew up in the area. “You could sit in there and be right next to somebody smoking and not even know.” Harps Food Store is about 2 miles from Park Hill. Every Saturday, the Fort Smith Farmer’s Market is held Downtown. There, people can find fresh produce, raw honey and other handmade foods, including pasta sauce and kettle corn.Short drive to Creekmore Park
Park Hill is less than 1 mile from Creekmore Park, one of the largest parks in the city. “It’s a beautiful park,” Buchfink says. “It’s at the heart of the city – it’s the one everyone knows of.” When folks first get to the park, they see the Grand Slam Fun Center, where they can play a round of miniature golf. The Creekmore Express is a free train that rides through the park, taking people past tennis courts, playgrounds and a pool. “During the holidays, all of Creekmore gets lit up with tons of Christmas lights,” Buchfink says. Across the street, the main branch of the Fort Smith Public Library is in a sprawling Neoclassical building. Patrons can attend movie nights and author lectures. Downtown, residents can attend a show at the Fort Smith Little Theatre or explore ever-changing exhibits at the Fort Smith Museum of History.Full calendar of Fort Smith events
Fort Smith’s calendar of events ranges from ones that draw in crowds from across the River Valley to those that are more community-oriented. Steel Horse Rally is a motorcycle rally and charity event that shuts down Garrison Avenue, which runs through the heart of the city, to everyone except bikers. “We have about 50,000 motorcyclists come in,” says Discover Fort Smith executive director Ashleigh Bachert. “Garrison just really belongs to them.” Live music spills onto the streets, and people can walk from food trucks to shops with a drink in hand. There are family-friendly activities throughout the event, with booths for games and temporary tattoos. “We had fun just looking at the different motorcycles and talking with people,” Bachert says. Money raised at Steel Horse Rally goes back into the community, benefiting organizations like the Buddy Smith Home for Veterans and the Fort Smith Boys & Girls Club. The Fall Festival involves most of Garrison and Rogers avenues, all the way to tours at the Fort Smith Historic Site. The festival leads into Oktoberfest, which features a pub crawl along some of Downtown’s bars.
