A suburban atmosphere in the city

About 6 miles from downtown, in the northeast section of Fort Wayne, Greenfield is a small, tree-filled village of about 100 mid-century houses. With just over 300 residents, Greenfield offers a calm residential atmosphere of suburban streets while close to stores, restaurants and major highways. “Being able to get onto the highway quickly is huge here,” says Shawn Browning, a Realtor with ERA Crossroads who also lives nearby. “It means you can be anywhere in Fort Wayne in 30 minutes or less.”

Dual credit at Northrop High School

Public school students attend St. Joseph Central Elementary School, which earns a B-minus grade from Niche. They’ll head to Jefferson Middle School, graded a C-plus, and then B-graded Northrop High School, which offers dual-credit courses with Purdue-Fort Wayne. If families don’t want to attend their assigned school, the Fort Wayne Community School System offers a lottery program allowing students to attend non-zoned schools.

Outdoor fun at the St. Joseph River

Greenfield residents live less than 2 miles from Shoaff Park, on the banks of the St. Joseph River. A walkway goes around the entire park, and the park includes a boat launch ramp with adjacent trailer parking for five. Those into sports can play 18 holes on the disc golf course or the traditional public golf course, play tennis or watch the Bishop Dwenger High baseball team where they rent out the field. Kids enjoy heading to the park to have fun on the playground and cool off in the splash pad. About 2 miles south, Mengerson Nature Reserve provides a mile-long trail through 47 acres of sugar maple, beech, oak and hickory trees. Even closer to home, Jackson R. Lehman YMCA offers indoor and outdoor activities. The facility features gyms, fitness rooms and an indoor pool. It’s right next to Praise Park, which has multiple ponds and sports fields used for YMCA youth leagues.
