About 6 miles from downtown, in the northeast section of Fort Wayne, Greenfield is a small, tree-filled village of about 100 mid-century houses. With just over 300 residents, Greenfield offers a calm residential atmosphere of suburban streets while close to stores, restaurants and major highways. “Being able to get onto the highway quickly is huge here,” says Shawn Browning, a Realtor with ERA Crossroads who also lives nearby. “It means you can be anywhere in Fort Wayne in 30 minutes or less.”

Spacious living on quiet streets
The neighborhood features three- to five-bedroom ranch-style homes, split-levels and Colonial Revivals built between the 1950s and ‘80s on quarter- to 1-acre lots. Most of these houses come with attached garages and offer 1,500 to 2,500 square feet of living space. Other common features include fenced backyards and sidewalks that line the slow-paced streets, allowing for casuals trolls around the neighborhood. Homes range from around $175,000 to $275,000.

Dual credit at Northrop High School
Public school students attend St. Joseph Central Elementary School, which earns a B-minus grade from Niche. They’ll head to Jefferson Middle School, graded a C-plus, and then B-graded Northrop High School, which offers dual-credit courses with Purdue-Fort Wayne. If families don’t want to attend their assigned school, the Fort Wayne Community School System offers a lottery program allowing students to attend non-zoned schools.
St. Joseph Elementary School is the first step in education for the kids in Greenfield.

Outdoor fun at the St. Joseph River
Greenfield residents live less than 2 miles from Shoaff Park, on the banks of the St. Joseph River. A walkway goes around the entire park, and the park includes a boat launch ramp with adjacent trailer parking for five. Those into sports can play 18 holes on the disc golf course or the traditional public golf course, play tennis or watch the Bishop Dwenger High baseball team where they rent out the field. Kids enjoy heading to the park to have fun on the playground and cool off in the splash pad. About 2 miles south, Mengerson Nature Reserve provides a mile-long trail through 47 acres of sugar maple, beech, oak and hickory trees. Even closer to home, Jackson R. Lehman YMCA offers indoor and outdoor activities. The facility features gyms, fitness rooms and an indoor pool. It’s right next to Praise Park, which has multiple ponds and sports fields used for YMCA youth leagues.

Nearby retailers and restaurants
Locals can head 1 mile east on St. Joe Center Road to get groceries at Kroger in the St. Joe Center Village shopping center. Northwood Plaza is 1 mile south of there, featuring Target, Big Lots and Walgreens. As for dining, Browning says, “There’s every kind of food imaginable nearby…and Shigs in Pit is the most popular barbecue place in town.” Diners at Shigs in Pit can enjoy their barbecue inside or on the string-lit patio. Other favorites include Salsa Grille, a Mexican restaurant, and Zesto, an ice cream shop where Sunday summers draw in large crowds to enjoy their dessert with live music.
The Village Tap is a restaurant where locals love to gather in Greenfield.
There are several chain shopping options in Greenfield such as Target.

Close to entertainment venues
Fort Wayne Philharmonic Center is about 2 miles away, where residents can get tickets to watch an ensemble. Piere’s Entertainment Center is also about 2 miles away, drawing lively crowds for rock concerts and DJ night clubbing.
A mile drive to interstates
Greenfield is surrounded by major thoroughfares, including Reed, St. Joe Center and Maplecrest roads. And with I-469 or I-69 just about a mile away, as Browning says, “It’s just really easy to get around.” Locals also have the option of getting around by taking a Fort Wayne Citilink bus with stops on the main roads. Fort Wayne International Airport is 15 miles to the south and the Waterloo Amtrak station is 25 miles north.
