Though not far from the neighborhood’s industrial side and downtown Fort Wayne a few miles beyond, the residential streets of Kyle Road can belie their in-the-city location. The neighborhood’s mid-century homes, which average about 1,500 to 2,000 square feet, sit on properties of a fifth-acre to a full acre and sell for some of the lowest prices in the city. Trades jobs are prevalent here, says Realtor Lilliana Caro of Coldwell Banker Real Estate Group. “We’re not in an expensive area where a lot of people can’t afford to buy,” she says. “It’s a good area and a good price.”

Older ranch-style homes priced lower than city's norm
Split nearly in half, the neighborhood’s southern section is residential. Its streets are narrow with no sidewalks and unsuitable for through traffic, which leads to a “calm’’ noise score despite an active rail line to the east. Ranch homes are the norm, as are mature trees. Most homes have attached garages, though front yards offer enough roadside room for off-pavement parallel parking. Homes sell for between $100,000 to $220,000 -- the city's median price sits right on the high end of the price range. Though most residents of Kyle Road own their homes, slightly more than a third of them rent, mostly in an apartment complex on Ardmore Avenue. “Honestly, it’s a great neighborhood for starter homes and maybe someone downsizing,” says Realtor Angela Pachuta of Re/Max Results.

Weekend shopping is easy in Kyle Road
Residents don’t have to drive more than a mile and a half for their groceries or a meal. “The neighborhood has a lot of stores and restaurants,” says Caro. “It’s a good location.” The Bluebird Restaurant is a nearby eatery known for its angel food cake French toast. Save A Lot is in the Foster Park Plaza shopping center a short drive northeast. Foster Park Plaza features several other retailers, including Dollar General and Art Werks Bike Shop. Residents also can drive about 3 miles to reach the Jefferson Pointe Shopping Center, a 600,000-square-foot outdoor mall with almost six dozen stores, restaurants and an 18-screen movie theater.

Foster Park includes a variety of active, passive pursuits
Residents are about 3 miles from Foster Park. This 255-acre space includes such features as a dog park, a playground, a community garden and an 18-hole golf course. The Rivergreenway, a trail that runs through Fort Wayne and New Haven, has an access point here. The best views are at Hanson Quarry Observation Deck, about a mile away, which overlooks a 1,000-foot-deep limestone quarry nicknamed “Indiana’s Grand Canyon.”

Foster Park offers frequent events
The grounds at Foster Park host several events each year. The offerings include a Fourth of July 5K, a multicultural celebration for World Refugee Day in June, a children's carnival, a National Night Out and a fundraising walk for the American Cancer Society.
Schools score in the C range
Students can attend Indian Village Elementary, which offers an English Language Learners program and gets a C-plus from Niche. They then move to Kekionga Middle School, rated C overall. South Side High rounds out the list with classes in computer science and coding, marketing and personal finance. The school gets a C-plus from Niche.

5-mile drive to downtown, but buses are available
Commuters who work in Downtown Fort Wayne typically have a 5-mile, 15-minute drive to work. Residents can use the Citilink bus system, but the route takes about an hour. Kyle Road happens to be one of the neighborhoods closest to the Fort Wayne International Airport, with a 4-mile drive there lasting less than 10 minutes.

Concerns about the water supply
Fort Wayne has had issues with its water quality in recent years, potentially going back decades. PFAs, a.k.a. the “forever chemicals,” were discovered in the drinking water. As of July 2024, the city has sued several private companies for their role in the release of these harmful chemicals into the environment.
