Northwest Fort Wayne is a growing community close to daily comforts

Northwest Fort Wayne offers a separation from downtown's bustle, providing homebuyers with the option of suburban or rural living. Homes range from newly built New Traditional-style homes in cul-de-sacs to established properties on multiple acres. Residents value how close they are to local restaurants and several shopping centers, such as Glenbrook Square. Recreation is also never far away, with Salomon Farm Park and other green spaces offering different ways to spend time outdoors.

Homebuyers can choose between a suburban or rural setting

Across the many subdivisions in Northwest Fort Wayne, most are planned communities with flat, winding streets lined with sidewalks and new-growth trees that dot neat lawns. These feature a mix of established homes from the late 20th century, which range from Colonial Revivals and Craftsman-style homes to recently built ranch and New Traditional-style homes. Homeowners associations, along with their adjoining fees, vary from one subdivision to the next. Prices start around $50,000, but most homes sell between the mid $100,000s and the upper $400,000s. Larger homes that rest on multiple acres in the neighborhood’s rural outskirts can sell just below $800,000.

School Choice programs give students options

Fort Wayne Community Schools enrolls children living south of Dupont Road, and Northwest Allen County welcomes those living south of the road. Both districts offer a school choice program, allowing students to attend any school within their zoned district. Several local private options are also nearby, including Suburban Bethlehem Lutheran School and Cornerstone College Prep School.

Local restaurants and shopping centers are easily accessible

There's plenty of places to grab a bite to eat in the neighborhood. Black Canyon is a popular eatery that serves New American-style dishes. “Black Canyon is really nice and is a great restaurant,” Miller says. Hideout 125, a speakeasy-themed spot, serves upscale eats like steak and lobster and is known for its old-fashioned cocktails. Miller says a perk of living on the city’s north side versus the south is the access to shopping destinations.

Within a couple of miles of home, you can:

  • Pick up groceries from Meijer or Kroger Marketplace
  • Shop big-box stores like Walmart Supercenter, Kohl’s and T.J. Maxx
  • Peruse the shelves of the many retailers at Glenbrook Square

Outdoor fun includes trips to local farms and Buckner Park

Farms are a dime a dozen on the neighborhood’s more rural western edge. Salomon Farm Park has been a working farm since 1871 and is a favorite among locals. “There are lots of things to do there, and they throw a lot of events,” Miller says. The farm hosts a weekly farmers market and seasonal events like Christmas on the Farm. The Salomon Loop walkway connects to the Pufferbelly Trail, which features miles of multi use paths. The recently renovated Buckner Park is another option for outdoor recreation, with a splash pad, playground and large picnic pavilion.

Locals find it easy to get around the city

Interstate 69 runs through the community, making for quick travel across the city. “The traffic here is manageable, especially compared to Indianapolis,” Miller says. Those commuting downtown for work can get to the city’s center in less than 3 miles. Citilink buses also service stops in the area’s more suburban southeastern portion. Fort Wayne International Airport is an 11-mile trip away, and Dupont Hospital sits in the neighborhood’s northeastern corner.
