Suburban Neighborhood in Fort Wayne, Indiana

Midcentury homes, from modest to modern
Built between the 1950s and '70s, homes in Royal Oaks have been well-maintained overall, with some remaining modest and others featuring modern upgrades. The western part of the neighborhood leans toward simple Cape Cod and ranch styles, colonials, split levels and prairie-style ramblers. With three or four bedrooms and 1,300 to 2,500 square feet, these homes list between $135,000 and $200,000, depending on their size and condition. To the east, across a broad swath of woodland, is the Bohde Grove addition. Homes and lots are larger, and architecture becomes more eclectic with the addition of Dutch Colonials, midcentury moderns and Greek Revivals. These homes average closer to $250,000, and a fully updated home with four bedrooms, 3,000 square feet and a half-acre lot might sell for $300,000.
Fresh air and indoor fun
Mengerson Nature Preserve presents a surprising nature hideaway near Target where locals can hike a mile-long trail through sugar maple, beech, oak and hickory trees. For sports enthusiasts, the St. Joe Little League field sits across St. Joe Center Road, and golfers tee up at the nearby Riverbend Golf Course and enjoy stunning riverside views. However, the neighborhood's crown jewel is the Jackson R. Lehman YMCA. Situated next to Praise Park, a small green space with three ponds, this ultra-modern facility offers two gyms, an indoor pool and sauna, a teaching kitchen, a sensory room and classes for the whole family.A lottery for learning

Nelson Snider High School completes the circuit with a B-rating and a celebrated athletic program. Bohde Grove students are assigned to Shambaugh Elementary, which earns a B-minus, and C-plus-rated Jefferson Middle School offers athletic, Anime and academic clubs. Teens finish at B-rated Northrop High School.Weekend activities for all ages
