History on the cusp of renewal
Established in 1884, Handley was once a thriving railroad town between Fort Worth and Dallas. Today, this Fort Worth neighborhood is on the cusp of a revitalization boom, says Jennifer Vokolek, a Realtor with Re/Max DFW Associates, who has sold real estate in the area for over 20 years. “Many of the older homes built in the 20s or later are receiving plumbing updates, electrical upgrades, and internet- and cable-ready hookups,” she says. “They’re being modernized for an influx of young families with children, replacing homeowners who have lived there for 40 years.” This boom and the neighborhood’s downtown proximity are bringing new life to this historic area.
Properties with personality
Handley homes are a collection of brick ranch-style houses, Craftsman-style bungalows and newer contemporaries. Large old-growth oak trees shade many properties, and roads are often lined with sidewalks that allow residents to walk from street to street. Most houses feature short driveways that lead to attached carports or garages, or long driveways that lead to detached garages behind. Buyers can expect to pay around $150,000 for a fixer-upper and over $400,000 for a large, well-maintained home on a half-acre lot. A three-bedroom, two-bathroom ranch or Craftsman, appealing to many families, might sell for $240,000, while a contemporary with the same square footage could list for around $275,000. “Handley was developed well before master-planned communities,” Vokolek says. “Each property is so individual, a mishmash of styles and periods. They give the neighborhood personality and a more customized feel overall.”
