Civil War battlegrounds transformed into residential living
Fort Wright started out as Union defenses in the Civil War as the Confederate Army approached Cincinnati. Today, remnants of the history remain, but the space has turned entirely residential. It was developed in the 30s by a German immigrant who turned the old battlegrounds and farmlands into the quiet suburb that current residents love. “The biggest draws are the quaintness and the proximity to downtown. It’s super cute. It’s all little, tiny houses—Cape Cods—and winding streets,” says Realtor Cindy Shetterly with KW Commercial and leader of the Cindy Shetterly Team. “You’re five minutes from shopping and ten minutes from the airport.” Fort Wright’s parks and museums highlight and celebrate the area’s history, but residents enjoy modern living with excellent accessibility and shopping nearby.
There are plenty of housing options to choose from in Fort Wright.

Shaded streets and landscaped lawns in Fort Wright
Fort Wright’s meandering streets are full of mature trees shading properties, and modest landscaping that adds character and life to front lawns. Homes featured here are often quaint Cape Cods, brick ranches and brick and siding Colonial Revivals with undercroft two-car garages. Sidewalks trail along both sides of the streets, and many streets end in cul-de-sacs. The homes here list between $275,000 and $700,000, with properties offering more space and bedrooms typically listing higher. “You’ve got 71 and 275 on both sides of you, and we call that the Loop. Anytime you’re inside the Loop, the home values are higher.”

Fort Wright Nature Center is a reprieve from suburbia and city living, with a little lake where people can fish with a state license. The center also features a bust of the neighborhood’s founder, with a plaque explaining his role in the community’s development. “We used to walk our dogs there,” Shetterly says. To the north of Fort Wright, Devou Park offers 700 acres of recreational space, including the Devou Park Golf Course, a public green opened in 1922. Paved trails wind throughout the park and avid hikers and mountain bikers can attempt the unpaved paths. Locals can also find remnants of the Civil War throughout the park.

Devou Park also hosts lots of events that residents can attend, like the Kentucky Symphony Orchestra’s Summer Series, which features three live performances at the park’s Band Shell. Neighboring Park Hills also holds lots of seasonal traditions. “Park Hills has a traditional Easter egg hunt every year,” Shetterly says. “On Memorial Day, there’s a big parade and a ton of people from Fort Wright participate as well.” The proximity to the city and the Interstates means residents can also go into Cincinnati and participate in its annual events and sporting events. “You’re less than 3 miles from the Cincinnati Bengals stadium,” Shetterly says.
