Rural features and expansive state parks around Foster
Foster is a rural township in the tree-dotted foothills of Pennsylvania’s Pocono Mountains. “It’s a nice rural location close to a lot of major highways and amenities from the two nearby boroughs,” says Randy Hockman, a Realtor with RPA Real Estate with 28 years of experience serving northeastern Pennsylvania. Two small boroughs, Freeland and White Haven, to the west and east of the community, are home to supermarkets and local restaurants. Closer to home, residents of Foster enjoy wide-ranging outdoor activities, from whitewater rafting on the Lehigh River to hiking in state parks or touring Eckley Miners’ Village, a preserved historic site and museum.

Hickory Run State Park, and history at Eckley Miners Village
State Game Lands 149 is a wildlife preserve within the township that is a popular spot for hunting deer, turkeys and squirrels. Parkgoers may also spot grey foxes and black bears roaming the dense woodlands. Hickory Run State Park sits east of town and stretches over 15,000 acres. Visitors to the park can cast lines at several trout streams, swim at Sand Spring Lake’s beach, or explore the wilderness on 40 miles of hiking trails. Eckley Miners Village is a regional attraction south of Foster Township. It is a preserved coal mining company town from the 19th century. Visitors can take tours of the village to learn about the mining history of northeastern Pennsylvania. Many small businesses like Whitewater Challengers offer rafting excursions on the Lehigh River. “Whitewater rafting is big in White Haven,” says Hockman.

White Haven and Freeland have markets and diners
Foster has very little commercial development, and residents usually head out of town for shopping and dining needs. For groceries, White Haven Market is a few miles east, next to Antonio’s Pizza and Hoagies for carryout pies, pasta and subs. To the west in Freeland is Carone’s Market, a grocery store with a deli and bakery. A few blocks from the market is The Other Side, a popular bar and grill serving craft cocktails with a menu of wings, prime rib and cheesesteaks. Hazleton is 11 miles west and features diners and boutiques along Broad Street.
