Bentonville's rural mountain setting with a friendly community
Throughout the year, tourists in Virginia head to the Shenandoah Valley for its outdoor attractions, from the Shenandoah River and hilltop wineries to the Old Dominion's only national park — Shenandoah National Park. However, for Bentonville residents, this is their lifestyle full time. Sprawling properties span multiple acres, offering mountain views of the park and the Massanutten Mountain range or barns for horses. In the summers, residents head out onto the river with their friends and neighbors, because even though life is quiet, neighbors are still friendly and connected. “I’ve got a hill on my property, and at the top of the hill, you’ve got a 360-degree view of Browntown, Bentonville, Front Royal and the national park,” says Realtor Martha Buracker with Weichert Realtors and longtime resident of Browntown, another community in the area. “And when we’ve got a nice day, I send a Facebook message out to my friends saying we’re doing a wine night on the mountain. We’ll just enjoy each other’s company and enjoy the view. We catch up that way.” Bentonville has a CAP Index Crime Score of 1 out of 10, lower than the national average of 4.
Kayaking on the Shenandoah River and hiking Shenandoah National Park
Close to home, Browntown Community Center has a playground and a small building people can rent for parties and gatherings. Shenandoah River State Park, not to be confused with the nearby national park, sits along the South Fork Shenandoah River, offering over 5 miles of shoreline, where people can launch watercraft or fish. In the spring, bluebells bloom along the 25 miles of trails. Shenandoah National Park borders Browntown, but also stretches down 200,000 acres of western Virginia, offering plenty of scenic overlooks and local wildlife like black bear and wild turkeys. Over 500 trails go through the park, but a few have access points and loops right by Bentonville. Overall Run Falls trail is just over 5 miles and offers views of a small waterfall. Little Devils Stairs Loop is over 7 miles. Skyline Drive is the community’s southeastern border. The highway goes through the length of Shenandoah National Park with four entrances and plenty of stopping points to take in the forest and mountain vistas.
Sprawling, multi-acre properties throughout Bentonville
Narrow streets bordered by either open fields or woods tight against the road lead to long driveways where homes are often hidden from the street. Most properties offer at least 1 acre, though some can range from 20 to 30 acres, where there’s room for barns and grazing horses. Farmhouses, bungalows and ranch-style homes typically sell between $180,000 and $430,000, while Colonial Revivals, log cabins and custom builds range from $500,000 to $880,000. Meanwhile, a small selection of new construction goes for $1 to $1.5 million. “If you have a riverfront property and a mountain view, that stuff goes fast,” Buracker says.
Like many of the other Shenandoah Valley communities, Bentonville and Browntown both have a selection of campsites and rentals available, accommodating outdoor enthusiasts and tourists visiting the national park. Some people live here seasonally. Regardless, Buracker says that once people get a taste of Bentonville’s lifestyle, they’ll likely start living here full time.
Bentonville's local markets and nearby wineries with mountain views
Small markets like Foodway Supermarket and South River Grocery attached to the gas stations along U.S. Route 340 offer quick stops for groceries and other needs. Heard’s Cedar Hill Farm Market specializes in locally sourced produce, dairy, meat and other artisan goods like jams and jelly. “We have great wineries in Warren County,” Buracker says. “It’s becoming more and more like wine country all the time.” Glen Manor Vineyards offers stellar mountain views, making it a popular stop for locals and tourists alike. However, Buracker specifies the menu is geared more toward the wine, so the food options are limited. For other dining options and big box stores like Big Lots, Bentonville and Browntown residents will head to Front Royal.
Taking Stonewall Jackson Highway to Front Royal or Luray
U.S. Route 340, also called Stonewall Jackson Highway, is the main drag through Bentonville, linking it with downtown Front Royal, about 10 miles north, and downtown Luray, 14 miles south. Gas stations and corner stores sit along this street, where residents can stop in for quick fixes and grocery needs. Warren Memorial Hospital is about 12 miles away, in Front Royal. Dulles International Airport is 65 miles away, accessible along Interstate 66.

Shenandoah's annual events celebrating nature
Being so close to the national park, residents can join in Shenandoah’s annual events. Wildflower Weekend is a 40-year tradition that takes place every early May at the park. Rangers lead guided hikes through the park and there’s a youth wildflower art contest at the visitor’s center. In early August, the Night Sky Festival celebrates the 2,500 visible stars over Shenandoah with stargazing and guest presentations about space.
